Review and Giveaway: EcoAble AI2 Cloth Diaper

I tried really hard to convince my husband into us doing cloth diapers for my first daughter, 5 years ago. That was a definite no-go. He thought the whole idea was gross and unsanitary. And, I was certainly more concerned with ensuring I was going to have help changing diapers, than I was about choosing which kind. So I didn’t arm myself with much information, and didn’t push very hard.

Fast forward to about ten months ago, when I found out we were expecting another baby. I now knew tons of mothers who used cloth and so I made sure to gather everything I needed to know.

Getting my husband on board was slow going, but eventually, with the help of first hand accounts from other dads he knew, as well as showing him the math of how financially practical it really was, I had a green light to start buying!

There are SO many different paths to take, and I had no idea where to start. So I took them all. Pockets, prefolds, all in ones, all in twos, hybrid, inserts, pocket—everything was so confusing at first. Our daughter is now 3.5 months old and we definitely get the hang of it.

While I still have a very low maximum I’m willing to spend per diaper, I have developed a bit of an addiction. I want them all!

When I came across EcoAble Cloth Diapers, I was excited to get my hands on one! I settled on an All-in-Two since it was one of the few systems I hadn’t gotten to try yet.

To explain - an All-in-one is a cloth equivalent to a disposable diaper. There are no stuffing inserts or covers or any steps involved. You simply put the diaper on the baby and that is that.

Whereas an All-in-two is similar except the absorbent layer (insert) snaps in and out, and lays against the babies skin (unlike a pocket were it is stuffed behind a layer of cloth).

Also, as long as nothing soaked through, you can reuse the shell and just replace the snap in liner!
The next task was choosing a print! That was especially hard, as EcoAble has so many cute ones for girls, boys and unisex.

My order was placed 14 days before Thanksgiving so I picked a diaper called “Blossom” with beautiful Autumn earth tones, and crossed my fingers it would be here in time. Much to my surprise and delight, the package arrived just 5 days later!

The diaper is every bit as pretty and vibrant as I had hoped. The outside is a soft waterproof material, and the inside is a dark charcoal bamboo. The snap-in insert is two outer layers of  soft moisture-wicking charcoal bamboo and 3 inner layers of absorbent microfiber.

It is a one size diaper meaning it can fit a range of 8-35lbs, birth to potty training. In the front are three rows of snaps to change the rise, which also helps with thigh snugness. Then, along the waistband, is a line of overlapping snaps to fit even itty bitty waists.

The only prepping needed for this diaper was an initial wash and dry before using. Although, they do recommend, due to the natural oils in the fabrics, a few washes before it will reach its maximum absorbency.

We’ve had a few sizing issues with other brands, but this Ecoable diaper fit Penelope just fine!

One issue we noticed with it was that after about 5 washes, the insert started pulling threads. It’s actually something we’ve noticed with many of our different brands of charcoal bamboo, so it wasn’t a huge deal, but disappointing nonetheless.

One issue my husband and I agreed on was the snaps. It is hard to explain, but they were sticky. They didn’t seem to click very well, and felt like they would unsnap without much force at all.  We haven't had any problems with them actually unintentionally coming undone, but  I can still feel a noticeable difference compared to other brands of snap diapers we have tried.

EcoAble’s charcoal bamboo All-In-Two diapers retail for $11.95, which is a very good price for cloth diapers! On their site, you will also find an array of other diaper styles, like All-in-one, pockets, covers, and fitteds. They also sell bundles of their inserts, both snap in and pocket style, as well as wetbags.

I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on a few more snap in inserts so I can keep the adorable liner on longer than one diaper change!

    1. It is stay dry, which means it will wick moisture away from your baby’s skin and the fabric will still feel dry even when wet. They are supposed to be antimicrobial and resist smells. It is safe to use against your baby’s skin (microfiber is not!) Also, they are less likely to stain.
