Review: Safe Catch Tuna (Tuna Roll Recipe)

I don't even know how to start this review because I am still so blown away by the quality, texture and flavor of the product.

Safe Catch Tuna was started by two childhood friends who live close to San Francisco, and their goal is simple: Bring Safe Foods to Moms and Kids.

This is what the product promises, a safe, low mercury tuna with incredible flavor.

As a mom of two, I have always worried about canned tuna because as you can read on many mom blogs, studies and in magazines, it's commonly known how mercury polluted it is, but not just that, to me it always just tasted like a weird mush full of water or oil. Then I got the chance to review Safe Catch Tuna and decided to give Tuna another try.

Here are some of the great things Safe Catch offers to you as a consumer (and convinced me to feed this to my children without a second guess!):

  • Their mercury limits are super strict. The limit for Safe Catch Elite Wild Tuna is ten times (10x) stricter than the FDA mercury action limit
  • Safe Catch Elite Wild Tuna is the official tuna of the American Pregnancy Association
  • Safe Catch Elite Wild Tuna is a Healthy Child Healthy World (powered by The Environmental Working Group) Trusted Solution for children
  • Their limit for Safe Catch Wild Albacore Tuna is three and a third times stricter than the FDA mercury limit
  • Safe Catch sets the strictest mercury limit of any Albacore tuna brand

But that's not just it.

They care about the environment and to me as a little naturalist / hippy this is one of the very, very important things. They use a BPA free lining in their cans and there are no fillers, no GMOs, no gluten & no additives.

Those are just the facts and information I got about Safe Catch Tuna, but here is what really blew me away: The flavor. The meat (yes, there is actual real Tuna meat in the cans and no soggy, wet something). The quality.

When you open a can of regular Tuna (I used Starkist to compare) you open the can and you find this weird looking, floating, fibrous substance but if you open a can of Safe Catch Tuna, you find a solid piece of meat in the can that's surrounded by a small amount of water – and even that is flavorful & there's no need to drain it!

At first, I was still a little skeptical of how I would like it, after all the watery mess was all I was used to, but once I had the first bite in my mouth I just couldn't control myself and ate the entire can within a few minutes. The flavor is so rich, I didn't even need salt or pepper to make it taste good!

When my husband came home for lunch that day he couldn't believe it either. He said it reminded him of his childhood. His grandpa used to catch and can Tuna himself. To him, Safe Catch Tuna tasted like the real, home canned stuff & it brought back some wonderful memories of his childhood.
John instantly grabbed a few plastic forks and a can so he could share another can with his co workers (who also love, love, loved it!).

Then we came to the part of making my children eat Tuna or at least attempting & I decided on making some simple Tuna rolls as lunch snacks.

My son liked them (he's a very picky eater) but my daughter absolutely loved it! She never had Tuna before and I am happy it was such a delicious experience for her.

(Please don't mind the bruise on her forehead, shes a happy little one year old who likes to explore, climb and run & sometimes her little feet can't keep up with her energy :) )

Here's the recipe:

Easy Tuna Wraps

What you need:
- 1 can yummy Safe Catch Tuna
- 3-5 whole wheat or regular Tortillas
- 4oz cream cheese
- Lettuce
- Cheese
- Salt & Pepper to taste

How you do it:

Open the can of Tuna and put it in a medium bowl (don't drain the Safe Catch Tuna!), break up the big meat pieces by using a fork.

Add the softened, room temperature cream cheese and mix it all up until well combined. Add Salt and pepper to taste if needed.

Now spread some of
the Tuna mixture on the tortilla, top it off with some lettuce leaves and cheese, then roll it all up.

You can either serve it as it is or you can cut it up in little pieces.

Enjoy :)

PS: this makes a great party snacks for the kids (and grown ups) ;)

Safe Catch Tuna and Albacore is available for purchase on their website or via Amazon in packs of six cans.

They also provide a helpful store finder if you'd like to shop locally for Safe Catch Tuna.

Finally, they offer a subscription service where they send you every month 6, 12 or 24 cans of their deliciousness in a can at a discounted price. For my husband and me that was an instant YES! As soon as we move we will be signing up for the monthly subscription ourselves and I can't wait to enjoy this on a regular basis.

So, if you now wonder “What the heck am I supposed to do with sooooo much Tuna??”, well, that's simple: Eat it.

  1. Hi Patricia, we don't get Safe Catch tuna here, but I do much prefer tuna chunk than mush that you find in some tins.

Tuna sandwiches go down well in this house and I never thought to mix cream cheese with tuna. I'll certainly be trying your wraps for a light lunch.
