Arianna's Magic Boots: Underwater Sea Adventure (Review/Giveaway)

9 comments:

At the beginning of the year, I proudly discussed a children's book called Arianna's Magic Boots by Karen A. Gasperini, which quickly became a favorite in our household.

I have finally gotten my hands on her second book! Arianna's Magic Boots Vol 2 Underwater Sea Adventure has been such a welcomed addition to our children's bookshelf!

Just as the first book, the story follows the adorable Arianna who uses her Magic boots (which are her AFO - ankle foot orthosis) to take her on imaginative adventures.

This time, instead of the jungle, she stomps her feet three times, says “AWAY WE GO!” and finds herself deep in the ocean -- her boots now a gorgeous mermaid tail! Almost immediately she is greeted by three friendly mermaids.

One of the best aspects of this book is the inclusivity and diversity. In addition to the main character's corrective wear, two of the fellow mermaids also allow readers to relate to several experience they or their friends might have.

Destiny has a cochlear implant and Carmela wears glasses. There is only brief mention of these, when Arianna acknowledges that there are similar items back on land as well. I like that it wasn't a massive part of their story, just a nod to these characteristics, but they are clearly much more than their differences.

Destiny, Carmela, and Xzayah ask Arianna to help locate items on a list needed for a bracelet to be gifted to their oldest sister, Lillian.

I liked where that was going as it appeared it was going to have an added aspect of counting, which my kids love in books. In one part, the mermaids need five seashells which was easy to count on the page.

However, in the next part they need six white pearls. There are many pearls shown on the page, but, unless I'm overlooking it, I can't find 6 white ones. This just seems like a simple missed opportunity - and also frustrated my kids!

However, that was such a small thing, and truly doesn't distract from the amazing message of these books!

At the end of the story, the mermaids present Arianna with a special seashell bracelet of her own. Finally, she leaves her new friends, spinning around three times saying, “AWAY WE GO” and when she opens her eyes, she is back on the beach with her parents, and completes their sandcastle.

The fellow mermaids in this book are inspired by Karen's real life nieces, just as Arianna is modeled after her daughter. I love that this family has these books with their likeness in them - how special that must be for them!

I'm not sure what could be better than a series of childrens books filled with characters of color, who are differently abled, and sends a wonderful message! I am saving space on the bookshelf and crossing fingers the story continues many more times.

The book is available on Amazon for $10.99 or Kindle for $4.71

Book Beau Sleeves (Review)

7 comments:

The other day, I walked into the lab where I get Remicade infusions for a couple of hours every five weeks for rheumatoid arthritis.  As usual, I'd brought along a few items to keep me occupied while I was tethered to the IV - my laptop in a small case, my phone, my Kindle.

Multiple electronics, so I can graze and read and don't have to worry about one or the other running out of juice before I'm through. It's happened, and then I'm stuck begging someone to find a magazine for me.

What I usually don't add to my bag is an old-fashioned book.

Even though I'm usually reading two or three at any given time, cramming a book into the bag usually results in a book that looks like it's been beat up.

I've even accidentally ripped a cover or page trying to get something else out of the bag.

This time, though, I brought a book and left the computer at home - it tucked neatly into my purse, snuggled against the e-reader and I was a good bit less encumbered and happily relaxed to read without worrying about needing to recharge anything.

After a few minutes, the lab tech curiously asked me about the sleeve holding the book.

"Did you get a new tablet?"

I showed her that it was a sleeve holding a real book, and she asked to take a closer look.

The sleeve I was using was a Book Beau Sleeve, Indie sized, made with a very cute eyeglasses fabric.

What had my lab tech's curiosity up is the same thing that has led me to spend the last month carrying it everywhere, from the day I first received it for review:

  • It's not just cute, it's incredibly protective and functional.  The padding covers the entire sleeve on both sides of the book and are as protective as the padding in my laptop bag that protects my laptop without being unduly bulky.

  • The stitching is pristine and is holding up very well to frequent movement in and out of my purse full of other items.

  • I can easily insert high quality paperbacks of average thickness into the Indie size and still have room for my paperwhite to come along.  I've had no damage at all to either book, tablet or sleeve.

  • For larger hardbacks or small trade paperbacks, there are additional sizes available - the Indie is the medium size.

  • The clasp is easy to open and close and does the job of holding the sleeve close to the book for better protection - I have tried and rejected numerous tote-like products simply because they overthought the clasp and made it too difficult to use.  The button and elastic here provides both closure and flexibility.

Before I'd finished that day's infusion, my lab tech was writing down the website for Book Beau and telling me it would be great for her daily Metro subway commute, and I agree!

In this past month, I've had several doctor's appointments and we even moved - Book Beau has been my companion daily, giving me an attractive and useful way of keeping my current reading material safe and at ready.  And the adorable pattern gets comments and questions everywhere I go.

Book Beau is on my shortlist of gift ideas for my book loving friends and family, and I've decided I need the Mini size, too - especially after seeing all the cute fabric patterns currently available.  I am positive that these would be very happily received gifts for Mother's Day, Father's Day and everything in between.

If you travel with a book or e-reader (or both), check them out.  I think you'll agree the hardest part will be narrowing them down to one or two!

Book Beau sleeves are available to order from their website, and cost $15 for minis, $20 for Idies, and $25.00 for XL. They are currently taking pre-orders for the new Jumeau Sized sleeves, sized to handle large hardbacks like the Harry Potter series - these will start shipping in mid-May and run $30 each.

Anime Bento Unboxing

4 comments:

Once again, I was treated to a fun Anime Bento Box! For those of you who don't know, Anime Bento is a subscription service that sends a box full of anime goodies and even includes a yummy Japanese snack!

This month's box included two figurines, one Sailor Moon and one Dragon Ball, a Ranma Express tee shirt, an Anime Bento file folder, and a grape chewing candy. Also in the Bento Box was a card detailing what was included in the box and a sneak peak of the next one!

Everyone I know at least knows of Sailor Moon, even if they didn't watch it. The figurine I got was Sailor Moon herself, in her Princess form.

She sits atop a little stand, and according to the pictures on the box, she can even perch on a glass rim. Unfortunately, my day to day glasses are too thick for this, so I only get to utilize this feature if I'm drinking from my wine glasses. So, for the most part, she lives on the shelf with the rest of my adorable anime figurines.

Dragon Ball Z was actually the very first anime I ever saw. I remember my brother and my dad watching it together every Saturday morning, while I usually read on the couch. To be completely honest, I never actually cared for the fight filled anime that honestly reminded me of a Superman knock off, but I still knew exactly what I was going to do with the figurine!

My brother had his birthday this month, and I knew he'd appreciate it as a decoration for his new house, so I wrapped it up and shipped it off to him, glad to know that it would be enjoyed.

The bright red shirt is a fun play on the well known restaurant, Panda Express. After a bit of searching, I found that it references the anime Ranma ½ that follows a teen aged boy who, due to an accident in his training, becomes a girl when splashed with cold water.

It has been said that Ranma ½ was actually one of the first anime/manga to become popular in the US, which makes it interesting enough that it's been added to my ever growing “to watch” list.

The file folder for this month is the same pocket type that I have come to expect from Anime Bento. The three Bento Girls in kimonos grace the front. With the school year fast approaching, I know that I will be using this!

Finally, the treat in this month's box was a grape chewing candy. Like the Pokemon candy from last month, I at first thought it was gum, but found out otherwise.

Usually, I absolutely loathe grape flavored candies, and thought it was going to be a treat for Mischief, but after smelling it, I decided to give it a try. I'm not sure what the exact difference is between Japanese grape flavoring and US grape flavoring, but I have come to the conclusion that the Japanese is by far the superior. Every single time I have gotten a grape something or other for a treat, I have ended up liking it.

Once again, I have gotten a lovely Anime Bento Box, full of goodies that I can use and love. If a monthly box like this seems up your alley, subscriptions start at $35.00/month.

A Touch of Spice: Beef Kebabs #FoodNFlix

29 comments:

I decided to join the Food n' Flix Club, where monthly, bloggers watch a selected movie and then cook something inspired by it.  This month's host is Culinary Envy (the invitation is here and the full round up is here) and she chose a Greek movie called A Touch of Spice.

I'd not only never seen this movie which was released in 2003, I'd never heard of it.  But they had me at "Greek", and since I was unable to find it at our library or for streaming, I went ahead and bought it.  I was a little intimidated -this is is subtitled, which I often find challenging.

But I actually forgot that I wasn't understanding the spoken language and the words and imagery were so lyrically beautiful, I found it easy to stay engaged.

In fact, I'm not sure I've ever been so frustrated to discover that a movie was not based on a book, because it seemed as if it should be (preferably one with a few recipes tossed in).

The composition is set up like chapters in a cookbook,  and the pacing and flow of the story is complex and well structured, with frequent flashbacks and thematic repetitions.

A Touch of Spice tackles the impact of being a child of Greek and Turkish heritage in early 1960s Constantinople, during a period of political conflict where Greeks in Turkey were forcibly deported to Athens.

Food is everything to this story - it is memory, solace, an expression of pain and of will, and it is the glue that holds together one's personal and cultural identity when home is no longer home, and the very definition of home is redefined by nationalism and politics.

Mostly, though, food is love - the love between a boy and his grandfather, and between the boy and the girl he knew as a child.

It is the love between his parents, who carry on an ongoing bit of lighthearted bickering as they tie together food and their memories of historic moments they've shared, and the aunts and uncles who cook, eat and share memories together.

It is the love for all those who would share your table, and those who are never able  to, and finally - and especially - love for oneself and the acceptance of who you are whether or not those who love you understand you. And of course, it is the love of food itself, and the process of preparing it.

It's a lot to unpack, yes?  This is why I so much wish this were a novel.  Even so, I managed to catch and savor a few delicious passages while keeping notes.

There were so many bits I love, from the umbrella that appears in so many scenes, to the explanation that men go to steambaths to discuss difficult things with each other because, there, they can open their souls, like steamed mussels.

The movie is divided into three parts, each with explanations of that portion's theme. I'm going to leave the plot details out of this because I recommend watching it!

Appetizers - "Appetizers tell of faraway places and prepare you for an adventurous journey."
The Main Course - "Main Courses take us back to childhood."
Dessert  - "...the desserts are the epilogue of every fairy tale."

The movie carries not just a touch of spice and a beautiful look at a period of history seen through a love of food and family, but also a good dash of humor; I recommend it highly.  There is even a pinch of magical realism, where cinnamon, used at the right, or wrong, moment can make a person look you in the eyes and truly see you, and where spices hold correspondences to the dance of the universe.

I expect to watch this again and again, each time uncovering new tastes of all the many layers this movie has to offer.

So now - what did I decide to cook?  I wanted to make a hybrid meal to reflect the variations as well as the shared foods of these two cultures.

We are very lucky to have a great little Greek restaurant less than a block away - so we picked up some Rice Pilaf, Pita Bread, and an order of Greek Village Salad as sides, and I made some beef kebabs with a spice-rich marinade to go along with it - Greeks would make souvlaki, although generally with chicken, pork or lamb.

I don't claim anything authentic about the marinade - I've made kebabs for years in a doubtless American fashion. But I did select several of the spices because they were a key metaphor in the movie, or because they reflect the Turkish and Greek cultures.

Touch of Spice Beef Kebabs
(serves 4-6)

Marinade:
1/2 cup olive oil
2 Tblsp balsamic vinegar
2 Tblsp lemon
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground coriander
1/4 tsp ancho chile powder

1.5 lb beef steak, cut into 3/4" cubes
onion or pearl onions
zucchini
pint cherry tomatoes
button mushrooms
bell pepper (assortment of colors if desired)

Greek yogurt

*Note: I can't eat bell peppers, so I left them off - but if you like them, please add for flavor and color!)

Whisk together marinade.  Place cubed meat in a sealable container that can be flipped over. Pour marinade over meat, seal and marinate in refrigerator for up to a day, flipping the container over occasionally.

Wash all vegetables.  If not using pearl onions, cut each onion in half and each half into quarters. Cut zucchini into 1/2" thick rounds, Cut the woody end of the mushroom and either leave whole or cut in half, depending on size. Leave tomatoes whole. Stem and seed peppers and chop into chunks about the size of the other veggies.

Two options here if you're not using an outdoor grill, and either will work - you can either thread the meat and vegetables on metal skewers together (which is definitely the prettiest presentation) or, if you are using shorter, wooden skewers or like your vegetables a little more evenly cooked, thread the meat by itself (with perhaps some tomato to help flavor the meat and a splash of balsamic or teriyaki sauce) and let the vegetables cook unskewered separately.

Our broiler where we live now is a tiny thing underneath the oven near the ground and it's very difficult to access - so I chose to broil the meat and roast the veggies with olive oil, salt, and some lemon pepper. Definitely a compromise, but it worked.

Once everything's done, serve with love and Greek yogurt, rice pilaf, and whatever other dishes remind you of home, however you define it, and those things that matter even when you can't see them.

Next month's Food n' Flix movie is the Princess Bride, which is an old favorite of mine!  If you'd like to join in, head over to see how to join the fun!

Review/Giveaway: Infidel Rising - The Torn Wings of Illusion Album Review

16 comments:

Before I start this review I would like to say a few words: I did not get paid or received any free products in return for this review. I am not an expert on music. this is just my opinion about this album and how it makes me feel. I did not do this review because I was asked to, I do it because I deem the album worthy of spreading the word about it. The Giveaway is also not sponsored - I was just so excited to share my thoughts on Infidel Rising's album, The Torn Wings of Illusion, that I wanted to give a copy away to one of our readers!

New fan!
After seeing Infidel Rising live on December 10th 2016, and buying their album that day I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve listen to it over the past month. To be honest, I am not the biggest fan of studio albums. There’s no particular reason as of why, I just always enjoyed live albums a tad more, but after spending so much time it, The Torn Wings Of Illusion has become one of my favorite studio albums.

Infidel Rising is a Power / Progressive Metal band local to Dallas, Texas with a heavy sound, classical symphonic and ethnic overtones and the lyrical artwork has depth and a richness of ideas.

According to  the band's Facebook bio, "the concept for Infidel Rising was always inside Travis Wills before he even realized it. Growing up in Houston as a drummer, it wouldn't be until he moved to Dallas as a vocalist that the calling would take hold.

It was difficult to find the right band members to create the sound they envision, and it ended up taking almost 2 years to find and put together the current members: Travis Wills - Lead Vocals, Wayne Stokely - Drums, Jason Donnelly - Guitar, Daniel Almagro -Bass, and Pasche Simmons - Keys and vocals.

I had the good fortune of starting todevelop a friendship with some of the band members on Facebook after my mentioning them in the Power Metal Concert Review and I totally took advantage of it by asking Travis Willis directly about the backstory of The Torn Wings Of Illusion.

This is what he told me (quoted from our conversation with permission):

“The Back story to the album is personal experience, or a different perspective to what has always been told.
The songs like Power of Goodbye, Reflections, Talitha, Torn Wings, Alive, those were all personal experiences dealing with death, or loving someone that dealt with depression, or dealing with my own demons or joys.
Holodomor, was a piece of history that never gets told, I thought it was important to bring it to light.
Exodus to Kadesh, Cloning Appearance, Finding Nevermore, were observations, and also a different approach into the main stream biblical teachings, which I don’t agree with. I believe that the Bible should be viewed thru the eyes of Jewish, and middle eastern view...not western.... we know nothing about the culture, all we know is what we think we know... Meaning, we may dismiss something written in the bible because we may think it’s no big deal...While that is the case thru western eyes, it is a big deal on the other side of the world. So this modern approach to religion has killed lots of what the original intent was, and it’s sad, and I try to expose it.
The Great Discovery is a song about an idea that you view the world the way you would want to live in... and that it’s in each of our powers to make a great world... to manifest it...stop depending on others to make the world special. it starts with you, and if everyone thought that way then the world would manifest itself differently. “
That should give you a good idea of where this album is coming from - now I'd like to share a few impressions of some of the tracks.

Infidel Rising – The Torn Wings of Illusion

Year released:   2015
Tracks:                  11
Run Time:            66:25

Artists on the Album:
Travis Wills – Lead Vocals
Wayne Stokely – Drums
Rafael Rivera – Guitars
Aaron Walton – Keyboards & Violin
Daniel Almagro -Bass

1.       1932 – 1933 (Passaeaglia)

The prologue to Holodomor is in Ukrainian and you can hear a dramatic sounding conversation between an older man and a boy. It talks about how the Government is to blame for the Holodomor.

Travis was so nice and provided a transcript for me:

Made by Stalin."Holodomor"
The man said: "Run away child, because they are gonna catch you and cook you"
Kid: "and you?"
Man: "well, they will cook me as well if they catch me. But it's no use, there's only bones in this body."
Kid: " is that a plague?"
Man:" no, son, that's the government, run away son, run away…"

2.       Holodomor

3.       Exodus to Kadesh

This track seems to deal with the new Testament and the different approach that Travis mentioned in our Facebook conversation.
“Believing all scriptures of darkness in truthThe lies of Sanhedrin abandon their truthLet us run to the mountains of JordanAbandon society’s violence and lies”
4.       The Torn Wings of Illusion

5.       Alive
Fun fact: Travis told me that this was actually the first song he wrote.

6.       Reflections

7.       Power of Goodbye

8.       Cloning Appearance

9.       Finding Nevermore

10.   Talitha Koum

11.   The Great Discovery
“The love of all grow cold, the hate for kindness unfolds. We’ve lost our way in humanity, and tensions grow. Our patience have grown thin, for others what they believe in. Embrace the cultural decay, has become society’s way.”
I honestly would love to quote every song in full just because of how fulfilling I find the lyrics, but I won’t. The lyrics are listed in full inside the album ;)

My personal favorite would have to be The Torn Wings of Illusion and Cloning Appearance. The Torn Wings of Illusion lyrics are just very deep and I can find myself in them over and over.

I think this album is in general wonderful, and the merge of Power Metal and Progressive Metal couldn’t be better. Many try and can’t pull it off, but Infidel Rising does.

Even with the longer songs like Cloning Appearance (8:47) and The Great Discovery (11:39), I never felt like they overstretched a song.

I feel like that’s the struggle with a lot of albums in that sub-genre - - that many have overstretched songs or that the symphonic & classical elements can seem out of place. But Infidel Rising balanced it out very well without causing boredom or losing interest while listening to the songs.

The lyrics are very deep and managed to provoke all kinds of emotions in me. Some of their songs make me question things, others cause me to tear up a bit (don’t judge me! I never said I wasn’t a tad over emotional when it comes to great music) and others just make me feel great, hopeful and empowered.

I think overall the album is very positive sounding but it has its dark edges.

Another thing I wanted to say about this album is that it comes in a standard Clear CD case with a small booklet which includes the lyrics as well as thank you notes from the members.

The CD its self has a matte finish and the overall design is beautiful.

In our conversation, Travis described the story behind the album artwork like this:
"The album cover is us "butterflies" going back to our past feeding off of it ....Black swan....hence black swan theory...living in regret... thinking if we would have done this or that we could have prevented the out come....”
You can purchase the physical CD of The Torn Wings of Illusion through their Facebook page for $10.00 which includes free shipping within the US.

Or you can also find them on Amazon Music as a digital download for only $8.99!

Overall, I think this band deserves a lot more attention for their work and if you enjoyed this review, got a chance to see them live yourself or liked their music, be loud about it and give them the attention that they are worth!

I also wanted to take a second to mention their band shirts. They have multiple design but I just went with the plain logo one instead of getting the one with the Album logo on it.

The quality is great. The shirt is on the thinner side, which I personally prefer, and they run true to size!

If you order a small you actually get a small and not some teeny tiny piece of fabric that’s more like a XXS.

Also, their merchandise looks pretty cool. I’ve gotten compliments for it quite a few times!

These shirts are priced at $20.00 each.

For more info about their merchandise check out the pinned post on their Facebook page!

I hope you have enjoyed this review and take advantage of your chance to win a free copy of their album!  Read on to see how!

Review/Givaway: A Seed For The Harvest, by Greg M. Dodd

20 comments:

A Seed For The Harvest is a Christian-based fictional novel written by Greg M. Dodd.

The book is about Jon Smoak, an abiding Christian man who has recently come to realize that his relationship with God has been a series of organized steps, and he has just been 'going through the motions'.

Relevant scripture passages introduce the chapters.
In an attempt to really understand his faith and develop a deeper relationship with God, Jon sets out on a journey and crosses paths with many people who wind up changing his life.

I found the book to be well written, easy to follow, and humorous at times. With twists and turns along the way and an excellent ending, this book is definitely worth the read for anyone who enjoys contemporary Christian fiction.

As any Christian knows, there are times when your faith is tested. I feel like "A Seed For The Harvest" lets you know that it is okay to question yourself or seek more wisdom during these times.

The story highlights the extent to which your Christianity can truly change your life.

I really enjoyed how well the main character was developed; Jon Smoak is completely relatable to the average reader's everyday life. I found the book to be inspirational and made me want to deepen my own faith and strengthen my relationship with the Lord.

As someone who has recently been through some very trying situations, "A Seed for the Harvest" came along at a very appropriate time.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who is in need of some inspiration, whether you are a life-long religious follower, or a new-found Christian. It may even be an interesting read for some non-believers.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but I did want to share my favorite part of the book, especially now, at the holiday season.

It is a chapter where Jon, his daughter Holly, his mother, and his friend Brant and the friend's young son Jacob are all gathering at Jon's house for Christmas. Being a family-oriented person, I love big family gatherings, especially around the holidays.  The main character discusses how he decorated at the last minute the day before the dinner.

Possibly this stood out the most to me, because I currently live in Germany away from all family and only get to visit for a short time out of the year when prices are most convenient. This year I got lucky and got to be home for the holidays - but this is not always the case.

The main character's relationship with his mother throughout the book is also very special and interesting to me, so chapters in which she was relevant were especially heartwarming.

Additionally, the scripture opening this chapter was about encouraging each other and building one another up out of the book of Thessalonians.  It is listed in the book as I Thessalonians 5:1, but it is actually 5:11:
"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."

Author Greg M. Dodd
There is a part within the chapter where Jon takes time to build up his friend. I find it extremely important to build up others or give compliments and be encouraging; you never know what someone may be going through.

Lastly, Jon's dog plays a good part within the chapter (appropriately titled, "The Dog That Saved Christmas" and really, who doesn't love a good dog story? 😄

If you'd like to curl up with a good book this winter and join Jon in his pilgrimage toward a closer relationship with his Christian faith, I recommend A Seed For the Harvest.

The author, Greg M. Dodd, is offering a paperback copy of his novel (currently for sale on Amazon for $15.73) as a giveaway to one of our US readers (including those of us with an overseas APO address).  Read on to see how you can enter to win!
