Stenciled Affirmations For Self-Care & Relaxation

14 comments:

One of the ways I deal with stress relief is to immerse myself in a bit of crafting therapy.  Just after election day, I was in great need of some focused self-care, and now that we are coming up on the inauguration, looking at my wall art reminds me we are bigger than the outcome of the election.

I mean, everyone who looks at this wall art knows probably what I was aiming for with it and what my views are on the current political situation.

Now, Reviews, Chews & How-Tos is written by a number of people with a variety of political, religious and lifestyle views, so I will not use this post to discuss politics, but I think anyone can relate to sometimes needing visual reminders to keep them going during dark times, regardless of what is causing the darkness for them.

For me, during a year that's been hard in many ways on a personal level, the election's tone of pointless drama, hate and disrespect towards soooo many things that I believe in made it hard, sometimes, to get through the day without feeling anxiety and despair.

I found a personal way to cope with it: Motivational Wall art.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the opinions of others, the media, the internet and what-not, but to me it is important that I keep a clear view on what’s important for me and my family. And, personally, I like for other people to see right away what we are about and what we don’t tolerate.

This is how this particular piece of art was born:

I need the people who enter my house and the life of my children to know that hate is not an option here.

And there is just no better way for me to express my love for something other than by creating. I love creating, whether it is an art project, food items or fiber arts. I need to do things that have an end result that I can view and touch and smell (sounds creepy, but hey, at least I am honest! Especially as the mother of young children, you need proof sometimes that you completed something!).

Now, there is more to this though:

I am not a professional in the psychology field, but there are basic techniques that you can do to improve yourself and your mental health. One of them involves focusing on words of affirmation.

What do you think happens almost every time you walk by a positive sign? You may not actively read it but your brain most likely does recognize it. Now imagine reading positive and happy things all day – consciously and subconsciously. It will eventually have an impact on your perspective.

We have motivational Wall Art all over the hous,e and I constantly add more or replace old ones with new ones.

I take my inspirations from many sources but my favorites are from books, songs and movements that I support.

Word Porn (a facebook page), as well as Pinterest are also great sources.

You could do something as simple as jotting motivational words on sticky notes, or print them out and frame them. Since I find artwork to be calming, I made this piece using canvas, paint & stencils.

Here is the how to guide:

You need:

  • Paint
  • Canvas
  • Paper, the same size as canvas
  • Brushes
  • Stencils (optional)

Once you have the quote or idea you like, sketch it out on some plain paper, the same size of the canvas.

This is a great way to make sure everything will end up centered, or the way you want it. You can also easily change things that way.

Pick your color scheme and start by painting the background for your picture.

With a sharp pencil transfer the sketch from the paper to the canvas. Make sure to only make really fine lines that your paint will be able to cover.

Write your quote on it or paint out the stencils that you choose.

If you have children,I also recommend that you wait until your kids are in bed to do this part or when you have a moment of silence (otherwise all the work you put in to center it may just be a waste of time because your kid may switch out the sketches – this is the reason why mine isn’t centered as I originally planned to do!).

Once it is all done, put it in a safe spot to dry.

What’s your favorite motivational quote? Do you keep it in view to remind yourself of it? Tell me in the comment section!

Review/Giveaway: B.A. Landtroop's Serenity Coloring Books

37 comments:

I recently got the chance to review B. A. Landtroop's wonderful line of Serenity Coloring Books.
When I first received the package I was surprised by the amount and variety of the items that I received.

In my package, there were two Coloring Books, two Coloring Journals, an art print and Coloring Cards – a lot to color and enjoy.

B. A. Landtroop is an award winning artist in watercolor, acrylic, pen & ink and mixed media. Her books are sold throughout the world and most online stores have her Coloring Books available.
Over email she told me that she is basically a one woman show. The quotes in the books are hers. The art, design, layout and file creation are all done by her. The only step that she doesn’t do herself is the printing. Her items are also decently priced, ranging from $7.99 to $11.97 on Amazon.

She says about herself and her art:

“Life creates how we see the world around us. How I respond is found in my art.  Each piece of art is an experience expressed with color, medium and the texture of emotions acquired in living”

Her books are also filled with a lot of dreamy, calming and motivating quotes that contributed to the relaxing experience of coloring.

If you find the time to check out her website, you will also find even more information as well as upcoming events where you can meet her yourself & some of her other works.

The first thing that I noticed when I actually started taking things out of the box was that each and every item was wrapped in a protective plastic cover; once removed I just couldn’t stop rubbing my fingers over the cover and pages.

I’ve owned quite a few coloring and specifically adult coloring books in my day but none have ever had such a strong, soft and wonderful paper quality! In addition, each of the coloring books comes bound with an extra sheet of paper between each colorable, to ensure no bleedthrough.

My very first coloring experience with the Serenity line were some of the Cards.

I just loved the idea of it and it sounds cliché, but the first one that I colored I ended up sending to my granny back home who loved it just as much as I did.

The coloring cards are such a great way to add a personal touch to a note. It is not just a card that you will send or give to someone, it is a moment of your time that you spent personalizing.

The art print ended up finding a spot on the wall in my daughters’ room. She likes bunnies and just didn’t let go of it once she got her tiny hands on it.

The quality of the print isoutstanding. So much detail and a soft touch. We ended up framing it to protect it from dust and the frame added even more character to it.

Unfortunately, the cards and art prints are currently only available at events, but she is working on trying to include them online in the coming year.

The Serenity Coloring Books Calm Breezes and Enchanted Waters seemed similar, but my favorite was Enchanted Waters.

The books are filled with detailed images that long to be colored. You will also find inspirational quotes in the Coloring Books which add a nice touch to the coloring experience.

They come in a convenient 8 x 10 size which allows you to just slip them in your purse if you plan on taking your kids to the park and grant yourself some relaxation while they play, and to frame your creations in a standard photo frame later, if you like.

My absolute personal favorite of the entire package were the Coloring Journals. They combine all my favorite creative parts: beautiful images for you to color, wonderful & inspirational quotes and lots of space to write down your own thoughts, memories and ideas.

In the past few months I’ve spent a lot of time doing personal writing and these journals helped me spark my creativity on a whole new level. They would also make a great diary.

I absolutely enjoyed reviewing these items and they would make great, thoughtful gifts or just treat yourself with some Serenity time.

My Daily Daughter - A Yearly Photo Challenge

16 comments:

When my daughter started Kindergarten last year, I randomly decided to take a picture of her every morning on the way out the door. I didn't really have a plan for it in the beginning. I just thought it would be fun to catalog her daily looks.

By the time I'd gotten to about 60 days of photos I considered stopping but ended up keeping with it.

2015

I was so glad I did because at the end of the school year, I had one picture from every single day she had attended school. I put them into a pic montage video and edited in some music and it turned into a beautiful living yearbook. Watching all the pictures go by, I was able to see how much she'd grown. I was able to remember the days we had a hard time getting out the door and the days she was super excited to go. I was able to share it with my friends and family and to also show it to my Bugaboo herself. She loves watching it.

2015
I am doing it again this year, now that she is in first grade. I'm excited to put together the montage in a few months. I have been listening to the radio to try to come up with the perfect songs to accompany this year. Last year I put the photos to Roar by Katy Perry and Brave by Sara Bareilles. I like to to music that reminds my of Bugaboo. She is fierce, so Roar was perfect but she is also timid sometimes, so Brave was great too.

2016
If you want to start this photo tradition, here are some tips I can offer.
  • Pick a spot in your house with good, year round lighting that has a permanent feature with which you can gauge your child's height. I use the hallway at our front door. Its very easy to see how much Bug has grown as she stands in front of it.
  • Take a couple quick photos every day. Sometimes its hard to get a smile and that's okay. The real mood makes it more fun. My kiddo likes to do funny poses sometimes and I love that. Other times I have to make a silly face just to get her to play along. Either way, it only takes a few extra seconds out of our morning to take a few quick pics.
  • Once you decide on the pic you are keeping, put it in a folder either on your phone or computer with the date so you can easily pull them up in chronological order.
  • When the school year is over, you can put all your photos to music using any number of photo editing programs. Just find the one that is easiest for you to navigate. I used Windows Live Movie Maker and it was very user friendly.
2016

I hope you will consider starting this fun tradition no matter what grade your child is in! And if you have any suggestions for recent music that you love, feel free to comment below. Thank you!

Review: Framebridge Custom Framing

13 comments:

This review is going to be a good one for all of you art fanatics and home decor junkies! I am one of those people with a million pictures on my walls in a bunch of the same old matching frames you can get from Target or Walmart.... I love eccentric frames but generally speaking, when you find them in the store, you know at least one person who has the same frame... Framebridge will most definitely change that for you.

Framebridge is an online custom framing service. You can set up your order via computer or with a downloadable iPhone app.

You choose the frame type that you want (they even have a cheat sheet, if you are looking for a specific thing to be framed.. ie: diploma, picture, etc). Pricing and Sizing are based on Length and Width of your "Art" and not the frame. It is as follows:

Instagram $39 (printed at 5" x 5")
Extra Small $59 (up to 5" x 7")
Small $79 (up to 9" x 12")
Medium $99 (up to 16" x 20")
Large $139 (up to 24" x 36")
Extra large $159 (up to 32" x 40")

You then submit your "Art" online or opt for them to send you a mailer to fit your art and submit it that way.

Once your art is received, they email you with any questions or concerns and then your art arrives shortly after!

Seems pretty cut and dry right? Well... I had a few hiccups that I want to discuss.. So I chose the frame I liked from their website and started the process of moving forward. I made a mistake - I chose to send in my artwork, which I later realized I should have submitted it to them online (due to me not having the actual art, just a picture online), this was quickly changed through an email to a great customer service agent for Framebridge. The site itself was a little confusing but if you take your time, read all the fine prints, you will navigate through it, and I very much appreciated the friendly help I received when I got confused.

One thing that I did not care for was the fact that only some of the frames offer different coloring for the Mat Selection! I did not know it was even an option until after I ordered and went back onto the website to look around, that I was able to choose a different color mat if wanted. Bummer! My husband even mentioned that our photos would have looked much better with a black mat compared to the white mat we got.

I opted for a Large and Small Frame when I was making my choice. I went with the HATTERAS frame which is so rustic and just gorgeous! This style totally fit my household and I had the perfect pictures for it. I chose to put some pictures from my honeymoon into the frames and Ahh sooo perfect!

I received my frames in a nice neat packaging that included some extra equipment for hanging options. I LOVED how my pictures looked in these frames, let me tell you! I fell in love! I went to hang them right away and was devastated when I noticed that there was rippling in one of the pictures. I immediately got on my email and let them know what I noticed. They asked for pictures to see what had happened. I got a very quick response, an apology and a tracking number with a new frame being shipped out just a few days later! I can say that this is one of the best qualities in a company, customer service, attentiveness and understanding! This company was great to communicate with and work with.

While I myself would not pay the prices for these frames (I am SO frugal, it is almost embarrassing), I think this would be a great addition to anyone's home who appreciates art and nice frames. There are so many choices to choose from and they customize to your size.

They offer styles such as Classic, Clean, Eclectic, Canvas and Other. With choices of colors, sizing and visual differences, you  definitely have some options while on their site. You can do Float mounting (which is beautiful for old style pictures to show its true character) for an extra cost than the regular mat style.

They use Acrylic instead of glass in their frames as well. This helps to prevent the glare that glass does and it is safer for the shipping process.

Do yourself a favor and check them out! I will highly recommend this company to my friends and family!!

If you use the code RCH10 at check out, you'll get 10% off your first order!

Review and Giveaway: DecalGirl Electronic Device Skins

31 comments:

I've never really thought of myself as a techie. I am not that person who buys the latest device when the newest version comes out, not that there is anything wrong with that. I do have quite a few devices, even though they are probably outmoded. I like to take care of the ones I have in hopes that they will last as long as possible, so when the opportunity to review DecalGirl cases and skins came up, I was pretty excited.

DecalGirl started out as a husband and wife operation in 2003. If you have a moment, read their origin story. It's pretty awesome. DecalGirl offers full color, high resolution, vinyl skins for tablets, phones, notebooks, laptops, game consoles. . . you name it, they skin it.

They also have high quality, protective cases with their unique designs as well. They have teamed up with several licensed brands and talented artists to offer a massive variety of skins and cases.

Seriously. Massive.

Once I was given the go ahead for this review, it took me a week to narrow down my choices. Their website is super easy to navigate and everything is neatly filed and organized. You can filter your options in hundreds of ways, so it wasn't a matter of not being able to find what I wanted. It was simply hard to choose because I loved so many of the designs.

I have a Kindle Fire HD7 from 2013 and a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. I finally decided on a skin called Alice Clockwork for my Kindle and a flex case for my phone with the design called Treasure Hunt.

Once I narrowed down my choices, it took about 4 days for my products to be made. Shipping was super fast and I had my package just a few days after that. Everything was nicely packaged in a sturdy, card board box so that the skin wouldn't become folded or bent and there were very detailed instructions for application of the skin.

I'll admit, I was intimidated by the process of applying the skin. I didn't want to mess it up. I was afraid that I would wrinkle it or end up with a huge bubble. So I did the only logical thing. I made my husband apply the skin. That way I could blame him if it got messed up. (I love you, hunny)

Surprisingly, there were no issues at all with the application. Hubby reported that as he was applying the skin, if he felt things were going a little wonky, he could peel it back up a bit and fix the mistake.

The skin was very thick and flexible, not like a sticker or a cheap wall decal. But it didn't stretch or distort when pulled.

The cut outs were in the perfect place for the power button, speakers and volume control. There were even special cuts to allow the skin to conform to the unique shape of the back corners of the Kindle.

There were two pieces to the skin; a front frame and the large back image.

I love having the skin on my Kindle. It makes it easier to find (we are a two Kindle household, so now I know which one is mine) and I feel it offers some protection against scratches and what not.

It has held up very well during the testing period. My 6 year old daughter frequently uses my Kindle and she hasn't damaged it at all. There was one tiny little area where the skin got picked at but I was able to smooth it back down and it isn't coming away anymore.

The flex case for my phone is just what it sounds like. It was a flexible rubbery feeling, one piece unit that the phone simply snaps into. The design I picked was very colorful and it looks great. The picture wraps all the way around the edges. The cut outs for the camera, charging port, aux port, power button, volume control, speaker and infrared are all in the perfect position.

There have been a few downsides to the case. The thickness of the case makes it a little difficult to get the charger plugged in. Not impossible, just challenging. The overall fit is not 100%. It often looks like my phone isn't snapped in all the way and no amount of pushing will get it all the way in. That being said, I've not had a single problem with it popping off and I've dropped my phone a few times with no breakage so its definitely doing a good job of offering medium protection.

Skins for a Kindle are available in a Matte or High Gloss finish and retail cost is $16.99. The Flex case retails for $29.99. DecalGirl offers several options for shipping from Super Saver Shipping all the way to Next Day Air. They except all major credit cards and also PayPal.

And, if their huge collection of designs isn't enough for you, they even can make custom skins using your own artwork or photos!

Currently they are offering a 25% discount during checkout with the code FALL25. If that code expires before you get a chance to order, you may also use the code DECAL10 for 10% off.

Between now and  February 15, 2016, our readers can also use the code RCHREVIEWS15 for 15% off!

I have been extremely satisfied with my DecalGirl experience and I will definitely be a repeat customer. I love that they are a small, homegrown, American company that offers a great product for a great price.

Review: Gummy Words Art Prints

2 comments:

Having a four year old boy is an adventure in trains, cars, dirt, and bugs. At least, it seems that way some days. As such, I'm always on the lookout for cute things just for him, things he does not have to share with his little sister.

Enter Gummy Words. Gummy Words are personalized name prints in fun colors. The fun, unique font style based on the yummy gummy worms treats.

Gummy Words were created by an award winning graphic designer and watercolorist, Dick Close. Each print is created on fine art paper and are personally signed by the artist.

You can choose from two sizes, either a notecard size 5.5”x4.25” ($7.00) or a larger size of 18”x9”, with the option of having the larger size framed ($70.00) or not ($40.00). The prints tend to look nicest with names that are four to eight letters long.

When I received my framed print in the mail, I was excited to see how my son's name would look gummified, and I quickly unwrapped the framed 18”x9” print.

As hoped, it was beautiful and whimsical, and I quickly hung it over his bed. Included with the frame was some hanging hardware, which was handy.

The black wooden frame is perfect against the bright colors and clean white background, and it even matches some of the other hangings in the kids' room!

An unexpected bonus of having his name above his bed in a fun print is now Xavier is learning to recognize his own name! Yay for learning experiences!

I also received a notecard sized print (5.5”x4.25”) of my own name. Again, it was beautiful work with the artists signature.

While I have not yet gotten a frame for it, I plan on doing so when once I have my own desk. Then, I'll have an adorable little reminder that it is my space for work, and to never take anything too seriously.  I really like that even the smaller sized print is on fine art paper, as it makes the print look really sharp .

Gummy Words name prints are a whimsical way to brighten up a room, and as such, would make a wonderful gift for kids and adults alike.

How-To: Create Quote Art without using vinyl letters

12 comments:

So you want to make a sign like this, but you don't have one of these:

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who own a Cricut or similar machine, and those who don't.

I fall into the later category.

I love the look of these custom wall quotes that I keep seeing on Pinterest. Upon further investigation, I'm finding that most of them are done using vinyl letters made on a Cricut, Silhouette or other similar gadget.

But, except for those rare times when I'm feeling crafty and want to make a sign, a gadget like that would go unused in my home.

Some people have a steady hand and are great a free handing beautiful script. This is also not me. I can however, trace like a pro! And that's what I'm here to show you today.

How to Create Quote Art Without Using Vinyl Lettering

What you'll need for this project:

- Canvas
- acrylic craft paint of your choosing
- sponge brush
Transfer paper (sometimes called graphite paper or tracing paper)
- pencil and sharpener
- painters tape
- Sharpie marker with extra fine tip or twin Sharpie with both tips
- Paint pens in your choice of color

I found all of my supplies, with the exception of the transfer paper, at Walmart and spent less than $15 on everything. I have enough supplies to make several pieces so this is a great bargain project!

Transfer paper should be readily available online, as well as at Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Joann Fabrics even.

For this project, I used a 12x12 canvas that was purchased in a two pack. I painted my canvas with acrylic paint, using a sponge brush. You'll want to let the canvas dry completely before moving on. I waited a whole day.

While you are waiting for your canvas to dry, you can start looking up fun quotes that inspire you. I wanted to create a Home themed sign to go on my gallery wall, so I chose "Home is wherever I am with you."

I then went to one of my favorite websites: dafont.com and looked for fonts I wanted for this project. I chose one called Tattoo Ink for HOME and Burton's Nightmare for the rest of the quote. Using these, I created large lettering for my sign in a document. You'll want to play around with your font sizes and may have to print once or twice to get the size you like. I used one whole page for the word HOME because I wanted it to be the biggest.

To create your pattern, simply print them in gray scale on the lowest quality print setting (you are just using this as a template so quality is not of importance).

Once you have your quote printed, you'll want to cut it out and arrange it on your frame. Use painters tape at the top of each piece to secure it to the canvas.

Place a piece of transfer paper between the paper and the canvas, making sure that the dark side of the transfer paper is facing the canvas.

The transfer paper I purchased had four different colors in it, so if you've used a dark color to prime your canvas you should still be able to get a good transfer with one of the colors. I used blue for this project.

Place a book in the void at the back of your canvas. This will support the canvas while you trace so you don't stretch or damage it.

Using your sharpened pencil, trace the outsides of your letters with a firm but not hard hand. It takes a bit of practice. You can lift your papers to make sure you are getting a good transfer, just make sure not to move the tape.

Once you have traced your entire quote with transfer paper, remove the pages and tape. What you have should look like this:

At this point you have a choice to make. If you are confident, you can go ahead and trace the letters with your paint pen. If you're like me and you want a bold outline to follow, use your Sharpie to trace everything first and then fill in with your paint pens.

It adds an extra step, but I liked the look of the sharp outline. I chose to also add the thistle at the bottom of my painting. I did this using all the same steps listed above.

And that's it! Hang your piece on the wall, stand back and admire your handy work!
