K9 Bath Buddy (Review/Giveaway)

91 comments:

In 2011, our family adopted a scared stray terrier mix dog who had been found wandering in the desert streets of Apple Valley, California. He had burns on his paws from walking on the scorching pavement. He was a little skittish at first but warmed up to us quickly. Augustus, as he is named, is by breed a very smelly dog. He needs regular baths to keep the dog funk down.

He does not like baths at all, nor does he tolerate professional grooming. I assume there is some trauma there. We have been struggling through bath time with Gus for 7 years now.

A few weeks ago, we received an interesting product to try out that claims to make bath time less stressful for doggos.

The K9 Bath Buddy is an adorably designed, silicone paw with a super strong suction cup that is used to attach it to the side of a bath-tub, shower stall or wall.

The surface of the paw can be coated with a tantalizing treat for dogs, such as natural peanut butter or something similar. The idea being that your dog will be so focused on the treat that they will hardly notice bath time fears at all.

The product began with two people and a very successful Kickstarter campaign and is now sold on Amazon, currently priced at $13.89 each.

So, onto our experience.

This is actually a really great product. It's fairly large in size, bigger than my whole hand. It has an indented surface with a few nooks a crannies to hold in the treat. We used all natural peanut butter and really only used about a teaspoon or two, spread thinly all over the surface.

We popped it onto the side of our tub and decided to test it out on the less nervous of our two dogs.

Achilles is generally really good in the bath so this was just an added bonus for him. He LOVED it. He spent the whole bath concentrating on one section of the Bath Buddy, making sure to get it completely cleaned of peanut butter.

Next up was nervous Augustus. While we had been bathing Achilles, Gus had gone to hide in his kennel and refused to come out. We had to coax him out with a little peanut butter on a spoon. Once we got him into the tub, he seemed interested in the K9 Bath Buddy but also unsure about the whole thing.

Bath time seemed to go faster than normal and there was certainly less shaking and whining from either dog.

Overall, I think its a great product and I can see it being really useful in grooming salons, veterinarian offices, shelters, as well as in home use. It wasn't a cure for bath fears for our dog, but it definitely helped.

Clean up was also very easy. Just rinse the K9 Bath Buddy and pop it in the top shelf of your dishwasher. The heavy duty silicone seems like it will literally last forever.

Two more of our writers were also given the opportunity to try the K9 Bath Buddy:

Lynda writes:

"We bathe Sasha in the kitchen sink, and I was a little concerned that the K9 Bath Buddy might be too large to fit well inside it - but it fit fine.

I like how well that large suction cup worked to keep it in place! We used some bacon-flavored squeeze cheese meant for dogs and squirted a few dabs on it.

Sasha is a good bather - she enjoyed the added element of having a treat although she was a bit confused about why it was happening during bath-time!

I can see how this might be very helpful for a dog that resists bathing and tries to escape the area.

My initial thought was that a smaller size for smaller dogs would be useful, but after seeing it in use, I have changed my mind on that - the larger size makes it easier for the dog to get to it and use it without a lot of extra movement.

I would recommend this to any dog owner needing a little extra help at bathing time."

Jessica writes:

"Gregor is not the best bather. He doesn't run from a bath, but he definitely does not like them. Getting my large dog into a bathtub is always hit or miss, and I often have to just bring him into the small shower cubicle in order to get the muttface clean.

When I got the K9 Bath Buddy, I really hoped that this would help at the very least get him into the bathtub, as lifting an 80 lb dog is not something I enjoy! Boy, am I glad for the help of the K9 Bath Buddy!

After showing Gregor that it was full of one of his favorite treats (crunchy peanut butter!!), I was able to lure the unsuspecting pooch into the bathtub!

While he mostly ignored the K9 Bath Buddy while being bathed, choosing instead to give me condemning glares, it was a great treat for after the ordeal.

Gregor may never be a great bather, but I can now get him into the bathtub and I no longer need to clean the pup in a cramped stall!"

Exploring Germany: Trier, "The Rome of the North"

11 comments:

In the Spring of this year (2017), the Army moved my family and me to Germany. We absolutely love it here! We are originally from the Northwest US and the climate here reminds us very much of home.

This is great for us because for the last 7 years, we've been moving around the Southwest from one desert to another. I'm so happy to be somewhere that has four seasons again!

Living in Germany has afforded us the opportunity to do some great traveling!

We have taken many day trips to explore the villages and cities close to our home village and so far, my favorite has been the city of Trier in the Southwest corner of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate or as we say here, Das Bundesland Rheinland-Pfalz.

Trier is an ancient city, originally founded by the Celts and later the Romans. You can see this fact all around the city in the form of ancient ruins that have been lovingly restored and protected.

Many of the sites around Trier are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

There are so many things to see and do here that we've actually gone back twice to take it all in. Trier is a city that can appeal to many different kinds of travelers.

Are you a Wine Lover? The city is nestled among picturesque hills along the Mosel River that are just covered in vineyards. There are so many delicious wines in the region and wine in Germany is almost cheaper than water!

Are you a History Buff? We took a Hop-On, Hop-Off bus tour of the city and got to see sights like the Porta Nigra, ancient Roman baths, Emperor Constantine's Basilica, a partially restored, ancient amphitheater that hosted gladiator battles, a 2nd century Roman bridge that crosses the Mosel and is still in use today, Trier Cathedral and the Dome of St. Peter. . . like I said, there was so much to do and see that we had to go back a second time.

Love shopping? Trier is home to a fabulous shopping district with Haute Couture boutiques and affordable shops with everything you can imagine, all nestled among winding, cobbled streets and beautiful, old world buildings.

Our eight year old daughter loved visiting the historical sites and learning about each one along the way.

Her favorites were the Amphitheater and the Barbara Baths. Each place that we stopped had informational plaques that talked about the history, showed pictures of what the location would have looked like in ancient times and were written in English as well as several other languages. We appreciated that very much.

Our visits were day trips, but I've read that an extended stay in Trier is highly recommended, as you can easily jaunt into Luxembourg, Belgium and France from this location and check three more countries off of your European Bucket List!

Pressure Cooker Chicken Adobo

23 comments:

Chicken Adobo. It's one of my favorite dishes. I was introduced to this flavor explosion by my brother in law several years ago. He'd received the recipe from his Filipina Aunt. I was so grateful to have the recipe passed on to me.

Typical Chicken Adobo is marinated for hours and cooked slowly to let the flavors develop. I've made it using every cooking method I had at my disposal including my dutch oven and my slow-cooker.

Both methods produce a delicious, tangy, tender chicken that falls off the bone and a sauce that people want to drink by the spoonful.

However, I recently became part of the Electric Pressure Cooker Cult.

If you don't own an electric pressure cooker (EPC) yet, you seriously need one.

I was on the fence for a long time but now that I have one, I LOVE IT!

I didn't need another reason to love my EPC but this EPC Chicken Adobo sealed the deal for me!!

From prep to cook without marinating, ready in minutes. You can't beat that!!

I like to serve this with Jasmine Rice and Steamed Veggies.

Here's how to make the entire meal:

EPC Chicken Adobo
Serves 4

2 cups Jasmine rice
2 cups water

Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast Halves (about 3 medium breasts)

1/2 cup Distilled White Vinegar
1/2 cup Soy Sauce
1 Tablespoon Fresh Grated Ginger
3 Cloves Garlic, Minced
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
2 Bay Leaves
Black Pepper

Vegetables as desired (I used a frozen vegetable blend meant to be steamed)

Pressure Cooker Rice
I use my EPC to cook the rice. The method that works best for us is 2 cups of rinsed jasmine rice and 2 cups water into the cooker for 6 minutes. After the cooking time is up, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes and then use the valve to release the remaining pressure.

Move the rice into a separate bowl and cover it to keep warm while I prepare the chicken.

While the rice is cooking, chop the chicken into bite sized pieces, and set aside, then make the sauce.

Prepare the sauce
In a measuring cup, add the vinegar and soy sauce. Grate the ginger into the liquid and add the minced garlic, brown sugar and ground black pepper. Give it all a stir and set it aside.

Cook the Chicken
When the rice is done, clean out the pot of the pressure cooker.

Place the chicken into the pot, pour the sauce over the top and give it a little stir. Place two bay leaves down into the sauce. Place the lid on the pressure cooker and make sure the valve is closed. Turn on the cooker using the manual button and set the timer for 10 minutes.

While the chicken is cooking, set some vegetables (your choice) to steam.

Go have a glass of wine or a cocktail! When the timer for the chicken goes off, let the pressure release for 5 minutes naturally and then open the valve to release the rest.

We like to do our Chicken Adobo in big bowls with the rice on the bottom, a layer of steamed veggies and then the chicken and sauce on top. The sauce is thin but bursting with flavor!!

Cooking this recipe in the EPC eliminates the need to marinate and the flavor imparted on the chicken is spectacular!! You could do this recipe in the more traditional fashion, using bone in thighs and legs as well. Cooking times would vary of course.

I hope you enjoy this recipe!

Scrawlrbox Art Supplies Subscription Box - Review/Giveaway

52 comments:

Back to school season is nearly upon us and that makes me a happy camper!

One of my favorite things about getting my daughter ready for going back to school is buying a brand new set of pens and a nice clean notebook just for me. It feels like a fresh start.

I don't have a particular plan for these items. I just like having them. They are my Tabula Rasa or Blank Slate. I hold in my hand nothing but possibilities.

When I was in high school I used to love to sketch with pencil, pen or charcoal.

Over the years, I've stopped sketching but the desire for a creative outlet is always there.

I think that is why I love the idea of a blank page.

I was recently the recipient of a subscription box called Scrawlrbox, which is a monthly sub box of art supplies.

When the box arrived I felt that blank slate excitement just holding it in my hand. Contained inside were items just for me, to unleash my creativity.

I was both intimidated and excited about receiving this box. I hadn't drawn in many years.

Would I be able to make use of the items in the box to give them a proper review?

My apprehension continued as I opened it. Once I did though, I had to laugh out loud! It was as if the curators of this particular box knew what was in my head.

Contained inside was a small adult coloring book, a box of beautifully bright colored pencils, two double ended vibrant markers, a double ended black lining pen and a glitter brush pen.

Here's the full list of what the July box contained:

  • Sakura IdentiPen .4 mm tip/1mm tip in Black
  • Spectrum Noir Colorista Alcohol Pen with Ultra Fine Tip/Fine Tip in Canary
  • Spectrum Noir Colorista Alcohol Pen with Ultra Fine Tip/Fine Tip in Hot Pink
  • Spectrum Noir Sparkle Brush Pen
  • Spectrum Noir Colorista 8 pc Pencil Set
  • Spectrum Noir Colorista Premium Marker Pad Butterfly Garden Taster Pad with 4 foil designs and 4 glitter designs.
  • an information card about the supplies included
  • a ScrawlrBox stitcker
  • a piece of candy

The adult coloring book was both a blank slate and a guided tour. It was the promise of creativity without the burden of not knowing what to draw. It was perfect to get me back in the swing of sketching.

There were also a couple of blank pages inside and a suggestion to use the lining pen to create your own coloring page. I used one to test out the color and quality of the pencils and pens.

The pencils were much nicer than my daughters crayolas, blending together with smooth transitions without obvious scribbles.

The markers had both a fine tip and a bold tip were incredibly bright.

It was clear that these were all items that would be appreciated by both the highly skilled and the novice artist.

Scrawlrbox is based in the UK but they will ship to all countries. Their subscription is available on a monthly basis and can be gifted.

The price is £15 (pounds sterling) plus £5 to cover international shipping fees. Conversion rates are available on their web page. Currently £15 is almost $20 USD.

I feel that the price is totally worth it as the items I received in my box were valued at well over $20 when combined. You also have the option to purchase previous months boxes while they are still available at a price of £17.

ScrawlrBox is offering a generous giveaway of a one-month subscription to THREE of our readers worldwide!  Read on to see how you can enter to win!

Review: Teasia K-Cup Teas

4 comments:

Hello there! Resident Tea Hoarder Lauren here. I have been so fortunate over these last two years as a reviewer for RCH to try out some seriously delicious teas! I was so excited to test out these awesome K-cup teas from Teasia.

Teasia makes eight different teas in convenient K-cups for your Keurig Brewer. They offer a Floral Series which consists of Jasmine Green Tea, Rose Black Tea, Lemongrass Rooibos Tea and Chamomile Mint.

The Formosa Series consists of Green Tea, Oolong, Roasted Oolong and Black Tea. You can purchase the teas individually or in a variety pack. They are sold 36 cups to the box, but the cool thing is that each cup can be used twice!!

I received the Floral Series Variety pack. The packaging is very attractive with detailed information about each tea in the box.

I tried the Rose Black Tea first. The smell is incredible and the brew comes out nice and strong. The rose flavor was a little too much for me, but they only use all natural ingredients so it wasn't an artificial flavor, just a  strong perfume taste.

The Jasmine Green tea is delicious and my favorite is the Chamomile Mint. It is great for a bedtime tea.

I personally don't care for Rooibos tea. They all taste like the smell of pipe tobacco in my opinion. My husband is a fan of it though and he enjoyed the Lemongrass Rooibos.

As I mentioned above, each K-cup can be brewed twice! The second brew on a single cup comes out slightly weaker in taste and color but that is to be expected. I still found the tea to be very enjoyable.

Teasia uses all natural ingredients and each tea undergoes a strict process to ensure the highest quality in each cup.

The company is also very active with charity support and environmental awareness.
"Teasia© is dedicated in serving its community and environment. With the purchase of every box of Teasia Tea, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to support charities in the areas of environment, education, healthcare and poverty. Help us give back!"
If you love the speed and convenience of your Keurig Brewer and you also love tea, then Teasia K-cups are a wonderful match!

A box of 36 cups sells for $23.40 on the Teasia website and are also available for purchase via Amazon.

The folks at Teasia have been kind enough to offer our readers a Free Shipping Code for purchases on their website!!

Just enter FSRCHREVIEWS when purchasing through their website to get free shipping!

Review: Art of Fabric Burlap & Brocade Table Runners

14 comments:

The holiday season is fully upon us and many of you are setting the scene for a beautiful holiday meal, selecting the perfect center piece, the right dishes, glasses and flatware.

But wait! What's missing from this picture? You need a special tablecloth or runner! That is where Art of Fabric comes in. Art of Fabric is on online source for charming touches to complete your home decor.

During the course of this review, my experience with the folks at Art of Fabric has been very positive. They have been promptly responsive in messages, very polite and accommodating.

Originally, I was scheduled to review a piece that would not have worked well in my home and they were very understanding and allowed me to select a different piece. I went with two beautiful table runners.

The first was a wide burlap runner, which I chose to accent my farmhouse table. I went with the burlap, knowing that it would work well year round for any occasion where I wanted to add a bit more country charm to my table.  If you check their website, you'll see they have several styles to choose from.

To dress it up, I also chose a luxurious, brocade runner in dazzling white with delicate little sparkling snowflakes scattered throughout. This runner is slightly narrower than the burlap so it layers beautifully but also works well on its own.

Each piece is sewn all the way around so I have no concern with fraying. I am very happy with my choices. My table would have been incomplete without them.

Be sure to thoroughly browse their website to find all sorts of wonderful fabric items to accent your home including curtains, throw pillows, full tablecloths and more.  Prices vary depending on fabric, but they are quite reasonable, and Art of Fabric offers a 30-day 'no questions asked' guarantee.
