K9 Bath Buddy (Review/Giveaway)

In 2011, our family adopted a scared stray terrier mix dog who had been found wandering in the desert streets of Apple Valley, California. He had burns on his paws from walking on the scorching pavement. He was a little skittish at first but warmed up to us quickly. Augustus, as he is named, is by breed a very smelly dog. He needs regular baths to keep the dog funk down.

He does not like baths at all, nor does he tolerate professional grooming. I assume there is some trauma there. We have been struggling through bath time with Gus for 7 years now.

A few weeks ago, we received an interesting product to try out that claims to make bath time less stressful for doggos.

The K9 Bath Buddy is an adorably designed, silicone paw with a super strong suction cup that is used to attach it to the side of a bath-tub, shower stall or wall.

The surface of the paw can be coated with a tantalizing treat for dogs, such as natural peanut butter or something similar. The idea being that your dog will be so focused on the treat that they will hardly notice bath time fears at all.

The product began with two people and a very successful Kickstarter campaign and is now sold on Amazon, currently priced at $13.89 each.

So, onto our experience.

This is actually a really great product. It's fairly large in size, bigger than my whole hand. It has an indented surface with a few nooks a crannies to hold in the treat. We used all natural peanut butter and really only used about a teaspoon or two, spread thinly all over the surface.

We popped it onto the side of our tub and decided to test it out on the less nervous of our two dogs.

Achilles is generally really good in the bath so this was just an added bonus for him. He LOVED it. He spent the whole bath concentrating on one section of the Bath Buddy, making sure to get it completely cleaned of peanut butter.

Next up was nervous Augustus. While we had been bathing Achilles, Gus had gone to hide in his kennel and refused to come out. We had to coax him out with a little peanut butter on a spoon. Once we got him into the tub, he seemed interested in the K9 Bath Buddy but also unsure about the whole thing.

Bath time seemed to go faster than normal and there was certainly less shaking and whining from either dog.

Overall, I think its a great product and I can see it being really useful in grooming salons, veterinarian offices, shelters, as well as in home use. It wasn't a cure for bath fears for our dog, but it definitely helped.

Clean up was also very easy. Just rinse the K9 Bath Buddy and pop it in the top shelf of your dishwasher. The heavy duty silicone seems like it will literally last forever.

"We bathe Sasha in the kitchen sink, and I was a little concerned that the K9 Bath Buddy might be too large to fit well inside it - but it fit fine.

I like how well that large suction cup worked to keep it in place! We used some bacon-flavored squeeze cheese meant for dogs and squirted a few dabs on it.

Sasha is a good bather - she enjoyed the added element of having a treat although she was a bit confused about why it was happening during bath-time!

"Gregor is not the best bather. He doesn't run from a bath, but he definitely does not like them. Getting my large dog into a bathtub is always hit or miss, and I often have to just bring him into the small shower cubicle in order to get the muttface clean.

Prized Pet Subscription Box: Review/Giveaway

I must say that I have some spoiled pets! I've had the opportunity to review more than one pet-themed subscription boxes with their help. Here I am again, ready to spoil my dogs with Prized Pet monthly subscription box for dogs!

You can purchase a single Prized Pet Box for a one time fee of $18.99, or a monthly subscription of $16.99. Everything that comes in the box is said to be all natural.

On their website, you can purchase other items for dogs and cats like toys, ice cream, party hats and other random items, but it looks as though the subscription box is only for dogs and only treats.

The prices you find on their site are pretty comparable to the ones you would find at a local Petsmart or Petco.

So, my package arrived and I put it up on the counter and let it sit for a day before I opened it and I kind of forgot it was there.

My dogs were being so weird and I couldn't figure out what the heck their issue was. They were obsessed with trying to get to that box!

I finally put the box on the ground and let them see what all the fuss was about. They both sat there and sniffed it and kicked it around, looking at me like Hello, can you please give us what is inside???


I opened it to find 2 bagged packages of treats along with a couple additional items.

The first bag was an 8 ounce bag of Paws Barkery Bow Wow Snicker Doodles. The second item was Lucky Dog Teriayaki Beef Bites in a 5 ounce bag. Then there was an individually wrapped rabbit stick and a beef hamburger patty from Barkworthies.

The dogs were doing circles around me so I of course had to open up one of the bags and give them a snickerdoodle cookie! Ummm - they smell like something I would eat!

I of course made the dogs sit and do the round of their tricks before giving them the cookie and they were happy to do it. They gobbled those things up so fast, I couldn't believe it.

The Teriayaki (as they spell it) beef bites were not a hit with my large dogs. It states on the package that these are perfect for small dogs which I understood once I opened.

The treats themselves were about the size of a quarter in a bone shape.

I tried feeding them to the dogs and they weren't as enthusiastic as with the cookies.

I gave it to them after doing their tricks again and they refused to eat them.

To me, they smell like your typical dog treats, but with a weird gingery after-tone.

The Beef hamburger patty I gave to Hudson one day after I had taken him to the vet.

He had his ears cleaned and was a little mad/sad at me for taking him in so I thought he deserved it!

I gave it to him and walked down the hall to get my phone to take some cute pictures and it was gone by the time I walked back.

I am talking less than a minute and the whole thing was gone! That's a great sign!

So, we will just go with hamburger patty is a hit and delicious, apparently!

The Rabbit stick I gave to my nephew pup, Buddy! I love going over with special treats for him randomly and brought this over one night when we were all having dinner!

The thing smelled so terrible. I mean, it made me gag by the stench it got on my fingers when I was taking the wrapping off and I had to wash my hands like three times!

BUT, boy did Buddy eat that thing up with a quickness! It was gone in a minute or two with him licking the ground where the crumbs had fallen off.. Another hit.

Real Food = Treats I LOVE to give my animals.

Although I am not budgeted to buy a subscription box for my animals at this time, the treat here and there for them is good enough for me as an occasional indulgence, and I liked knowing that Prized Pet's treats are good quality and mostly very popular with my dogs.

I know there are a ton of people out there who love to spoil their pets rotten, and this would be a great treat for them and their little furry loved ones. The price is good, the treats are good and the animals love them. Win win for everyone!

Review: Open Farm Dog Treats

It's been a pretty interesting few weeks for our old beagle, Sadie - she's ambling toward sixteen years old, and has been exhibiting geriatric type issues for a good while now.  Little energy, grumpy, no longer running or able to get up on her back feet, much less jump, and when we moved into our new apartment in August, we realized she couldn't handle the one flight of stairs necessary to get to our door.

We'd resigned ourselves to thinking this was just the way it was going to be now, and we did what we could to keep her happy and comfortable. She did enjoy slow rambling walks through the neighborhood, and we've been seeing to it she gets one or two good excursions a day.

But then her new vet ran some tests and we discovered she had, somewhere along the way, developed Addison's Disease, a chronic condition where the adrenal system is depressed, and the symptions are almost all the things I just mentioned.

Left untreated, it can lead to organ failure and death, and while it can happen at any age, it is underdiagnosed among elderly dogs because of how much it just looks like old age.

The treatment is simple - a daily dose of prednisone does the trick.  And it worked, almost immediately, to return our eager, active, happy dog back to us.

The downside of prednisone, is that it also made her more assertive, stubborn and demanding, especially where food was involved, and she quite quickly took on more weight than is good for her, after a few months of finally getting it under control.

I'm leading with all that, because coincidentally, at the same time, we were testing out Open Farm Dog Treats for review, and I think  they saved  the day when it came to having good-for-her treats I could feel fine with letting her have when she's behaving like she's withering away from starvation because we are being strict about portion control.

Open Farm is an amazing company that not only cares about the quality of food and treats your dog or cat gets - it cares about where the meat is sourced, putting strong emphasis on humane and sustainable practices.  And it does something I have never seen in a pet food before - it allows you to look up the farms that sourced each bag individually by using a code number on the bag!

Open Farm makes 3 varieties of dog food, 2 varieties of cat food, and 5 varieties of dog treats.  I reviewed three of the five treat varieties for this review: Dehydrated Turkey Treats, Dehydrated Chicken Treats and Dehydrated Cod Skins.

The turkey and chicken varieties are very similar - they consider of crunchy square nuggets that are composed of Humanely farmed chicken or turkey, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), molasses, sunflower lecithin, sea salt, mixed tocopherols (a natural preservative), and rosemary extract.

The turkey variety is slightly lighter in color but otherwise I can't tell all that much difference in them.

The two varieties we didn't try were beef and pork, and looking at their ingredients online, they use the same formula, so selecting on over another should be simply a matter of choosing what your dog might like best.

Sadie enjoys them a lot - they are rather more lightweight than the look (because it's all dehydrated), but has a great time catching them and crunching them up (and then hosing the ground for any possible dropped crumbs).  She not only recognizes the bag on sight, but she knows where they're stored, and will go stare at the cabinet door, dancing around and barking at us to give her one. (This is much more demanding behavior than we are used to!)

But her real love is reserved for the Dehydrated Cod Skins.

I had a feeling she was going to be a fan - she's got a long history of chowing through any cat food that ever comes her way, and when we have salmon for dinner, she goes into ecstasy when we let her have the skins.

I was very, very right on this!  The first time I gave her one, her eyes rolled up in her head with joy.

And I feel great about letting her have them, because the ingredients list is: cod skins.

That's it! Sustainable, Alaskan wild caught cod.  The skins are dehyrated into a lightweight crunchy wafer that provides great crunch, and miraculously isn't giving her a terrible case of fish breath.

These have also proved to be highly motivational - not only did she finally crack the code on tackling our apartment stares after being confronted with a Cod Skin waiting for her at the top, but she'll now jump up to get them when we put one up on the ottoman for her.  She's not yet tried to completely jump up onto the chair, so we don't know yet if that's a skill she can still handle - but even if not, it's so good to see her willing  to work to get something she loves.

Since she's going to be stuck on prednisone for life, I will be buying the Open Farm Cod Skins to keep her hunger monster at bay without loading her up on unnecessary fillers.

Review/Giveaway: Brothers Complete Dog Food

Our old girl, Sadie Beagle, is well into her 15th year, and as she gets older, it continues to be more important to give her the best possible care to keep her as healthy, happy, active and painfree as possible.

She's been pretty fortunate - while she definitely isn't young anymore, she's had no major illnesses or long term conditions.  But she is slowing down - a 'bad day' can quickly slide into a troubling bad week of either nothing but sleep, or crankiness, or deciding she doesn't want to eat anymore.  So, we try to keep bad days to a minimum.

She gets regular walks - and in spite of some lost stamina, she'll still happily do an hour long slow ramble around the neighborhood and through a nearby wooded park if we are willing to spend the time doing it.  The other major way we try to keep her healthy is by feeding her high quality food.

Over the last month and a half, she's been getting Brothers Complete Dog Food and treats, and we've all been quite happy with it!  Prior to starting this dog food, she'd been nibbling at her food, but often leaving some in the bowl, and generally acting bored and disinterested, while begging a lot for nibbles of our food or snacks.

After starting her on Brothers Complete, we quickly became aware of two changes - she was eating her meal shortly after it arrived, and she wasn't being constantly beggy about wanting other things.  Once or twice a day, we were giving her one of the Brothers Complete treats, but that was it, and she's pretty consistently been content with it.  At her most recent weigh-in, she'd lost almost 3 pounds, pulling her out of overweight status for a dog of her breed.

So, what makes Brothers Complete Dog Food special?

Let's start with what's in it.

Brothers Complete is a high-protein dog food (33-40% human grade free-range proteins compared to 15-25% non-human grade protein average in regular commercial dog foods) that uses no grains or nutrient-free fillers.
It also includes a balanced formula of enzymes and probiotics to help maintain dogs' health throughout their lifespan.

The lack of filler means that less food will satiate and nourish the dog, and the built in supplements mean less wrestling with your dog to try to get them to take another pill or foul tasting liquid (the last time we tried that, she went on a total hunger strike for nearly two weeks).

Brothers Complete is GMO, antibiotic & hormone, grain, sugar, and artificial color/preservative free, and contains no white or sweet potatoes.

In addition, Brothers Complete is made in the USA from products that are sourced in the USA - any pet owner that has followed some of the negative news about pet foods sourced from China knows why this matters.

One of the things Sadie has been fighting with over the last couple of years is hot spots, and one of my hopes in using Brothers Complete is  that the problem would stop with a shift in her diet (read their FAQ to see why their food may be helpful for dogs with food sensitivities and problematic skin).

I can't say they've entirely stopped - she's currently being treated for yet another hot spot.  But we have only used this brand for about six weeks, so I think it may be too early to tell what the longterm results might be on that score.  Even so, I feel very comfortable with what she is getting from Brother's Complete and we plan to continue making this our dog food brand of choice with her.

Because Brother's Complete is so nutritionally different from standard dog food, they recommend cutting it in with the dog's regular food at first to help them adjust without any gastric stress.  We did that and noticed no difficulties, other than realizing after a few days that she was actually eating around her regular kibble and just eating the good stuff!

Brothers Complete comes in four varieties of dog food and treats: Turkey, Chicken, Venison & Lamb. I'll be honest with you - to me, they all smelled and looked about the same and if the taste is like the smell, it is definitely not one of those silly products designed to appeal to the human palate over the dog's interests and needs.

But Sadie, while she likes them all and hasn't grown one bit tired of any of them, gets positively giddy about the Venison variety.  Beyond your dog's preferences, I don't see that anything about the blends to suggest that one should be recommended over the other.

In fact, Brothers Complete does not make separate blends for seniors or puppies, nor do they make multiple sizes of kibble - the kibble is on the small side, suitable for small dogs but perfectly fine fotr larger dogs (in fact, Sadie's old teeth seem to like the smaller size much better).  Their FAQ explains why seniors and puppies as well as dogs in their active adult years do very well on Brothers Complete.

As for the bone-shaped dog treats - I feel like I'm conning her everytime I give her one, because they are pretty much the exact same formula pressed into a fun little cookie, so there is no guilt at all in letting her have one.

We've used these to lure her out from behind furniture, and to coax her to try walking up the flight of stairs to our apartment. The appetite is willing, but she is unused to stairs, and so far since we moved here, she is having none of it.  The Brother's Complete treats are so far the only thing that have gotten her to go up them, instead of planting herself stubbornly at the bottom of them until she's picked up and carried.

All in all, I can't say a single negative thing about this brand - it's real food and our dog loves it.  Since we love her, that makes us very happy!

Review: Pet Gift Box June

Many of you know by now of my love for Pet Gift Box, and once again, Gregor and I were lucky enough to get one for June. I was so excited to be able to share new goodies with my pup, and to try new toys and treats.

The theme for June's box was Gone Fishing, with two fish shaped toys and three different treats for Gregor to enjoy.

While both toys squeak, one is made of burlap with crinkle material inside while the other is a smaller rubber toy that would be great for outside play as well as inside.

The treats were a bone shaped biscuit that was a salmon and mango flavor, some crispy salmon skin, and a bag of sushi treats.

Like most dog toys here, these two adorable fishies do double duty by being kid entertainment as well as puppy entertainment. 

The “Catch of the Day” rubber fish doesn't get played with as much, but the Muttface is sometimes picky about what he enjoys, and I think that most dogs would play with it more often. It will make for a good toy for visiting pups to play with.

The burlap “Gone Fishing” toy, however, always gets Gregor in a happy, playful mood when I find it and start squeaking it. He will actually chase and play fetch with it, like the football from January's box.

 Unfortunately, the kids also really like this fishy, and often squirrel it away in their rooms! These two toys are both welcome additions to our little bin.

There were three different treats in this box, each met with different levels of enthusiasm from Gregor.

The Salmon Mango Fish Bone was the first we tried. I ended up breaking it up into three bits, and didn't give it to him all at once.

This was a crunchy treat, and after an initial questioning of it, the Muttface ate it up with no problems.

He wasn't exactly begging for the rest of it, but the next time I brought it out, he at least showed some desire for it.

It didn't smell all that fishy, but neither did it smell sweet, both were kind of what I was expecting; it really just smelled like generic dog treats/food.

The second treat we tried was the Barkworthies Salmon Skin. Gregor acted at first like he wanted it more than air, but once he got this curly crispy bit of skin in his mouth, he decided he had no want for it at all.
I put it in his dog bowl for later munching, but he left it there, eating around it, for days. After a few days, the cat actually snuck into his bowl and stole it. At least she enjoyed the fishy goodness.

The last treats were Ocean Sushi. These treats are slightly larger than a quarter and smell the most like fish. Gregor likes the taste of these chewy treats, and is always excited when I bring out the bag. The only thing about these he does not enjoy is when bits of it stick to his teeth, although he has this issue with just about any non-crunchy treat.

Although the goodies in this box were a bit hit and miss for Gregor, I really enjoy having the opportunity to try out new toys and treats, and it is awesome watching your beloved pup get excited because he knows that the box in your hands is just for him!

For those who have followed us for a while, you are familiar with the PetGiftbox subscription box and how much Gregor and I love them. Each month, a box full of goodies that coincide with the month's theme for your pet is delivered to your mailbox.

May's box came as a surprise gift to our mailbox, and what a happy surprise it was! Gregor instantly recognized the box as his and was even more excited than I was to open it. The box's theme was military for Memorial Day. Inside the box was a cute little camo bandanna, a black and pink tug rope toy, a camo dog shaped toy, an eagle toy, and a bag of Troop Treats dog treats.

The Troop Treats are dog treats that are made in the USA, and smell vaguely minty, to keep your dog's breath fresh. These green man-shaped treats are eaten by the Muttface, but really aren't his favorite things. Gregor is somewhat picky about what he decides to eat sometimes (seriously, he ate all of his dog food once, and refused to eat the pb&j sandwich), so I'm not really surprised that he was a little finicky about them.

While I would love to say that the stuffed eagle and dog toys were Gregor's new favorites, I cannot. The football from January's box is still dearest to him.  Certainly, he plays with them, but only when my daughter allows him to!

Both toys are stuffed with polyfill and have squeakers in the main body. The eagle is more firmly stuffed and has stitching on its camouflaged body that suggests that it would hold up better to a heavier chewer, but my dog is not one of those.

The dog with its exaggerated limbs and neck of crinkly digital camo fabric is a great little tossing and tugging toy, if your pup is into that kind of thing.

The toy that gets the most use is actually the tug rope, which was not anticipated. Gregor will actually lay down and chew on it, unlike most toys of his. I was honestly expecting the black, gray, and pink rope to be left to gather dust. As usual, when I try to guess what my dog will like, I was mistaken.

That's the cool thing about subscription boxes - it lets Gregor discover toys and treats I might never buy, thinking he wouldn't be interested.

The last item was a cute little green camouflaged bandanna for him to wear. He doesn't care about whether he has it on or not, but I think it's an adorable summer accessory! It's not a full square bandanna, just a triangular bit of fabric, but it's the perfect size for Gregor.

The May PetGiftbox did not disappoint me at all, and I love being able to surprise my sweet doggie with treats and toys!
