Last spring, my husband and I moved into our current apartment, so this is the first Christmas we've had here!   We have three small areas where we can decorate for the season:  a metal year-'round ornament tree in the dining area, the mantle over the fireplace, and a small antique sewing machine console in front of the living room window.

I'm rather pleased with how they all came out, although there were still several items in the bins that we just had no room for.

Evergreen garland and lights give this metal ornament tree the illusion of being an evergreen tree.  Our ornaments are an eclectic collection of purchased items, stitched ornaments and a few of my (now adult) children's creations from when they were small.

This was an experiment I did a few years ago, creating a cross stitched 3D TARDIS with perforated plastic.  It was such a pain in the neck to stitch together, and the plastic bows in slightly, so I've never been tempted to make another.

This stuffed teddy ornament was made from a scrap of fabric from a baby blanket I quilted for my second oldest daughter.

Just a few favorite ornaments - the one in the center is a Mill Hill cross stitch kit, stitched on gold perforated paper and beaded.   I so love how that came out!

Our mantle was filled with assorted Santas, nutcrackers and tomtes and provided a good place to display assorted leftover ornaments that found no place on the tree.

Two large Nuremberg style angels are sharing space with my peacock figuring in front of the window.

Finally, our greenman wallhanging got a Yuletide crown for the occasion.

Literary Christmas Ornament DIY

For someone that can't sew a button, or stitch a thread, I really love to find ways to be creative and even better if it's good enough to show off or gift!

A few years ago I did a project I'd been wanting to do for as long as I could remember. I wanted to use my original, completely falling apart copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone in something artistic to breath new life to it.

Don't worry, this paperback has been replaced by numerous copies!  Even though it was completely destroyed after nearly 2 decades of love, I was reallllllly hesitant to cut it up at all.

I may have closed my eyes for the first snip.

Using craft glue, Glass ornament balls and snippets of some of my favorite lines, I made Christmas Ornaments that I will treasure forever!

Literary Christmas Ornaments

Supplies:
Glass ornament ball
sponge brush
Mod Podge
book you can sacrifice
scissors
charms/ribbons of your choice for final touches.

First prepare your page pieces. I personally used favorite lines or quotes that mean a lot to me, chapter names, and even pictures on some. Cut pieces and set aside.

Pour Mod Podge into a container for dipping.

Working one strip at a time, brush Mod Podge along the strip while straightening it out on glass ball.

Once all pieces are assembled as desired, do another coat of Mod Podge over entire ornament. For this coat, I used a glossy version.

Once completely dry, add any desired decorations.

I glued a part of the Sorting Hats song to a sturdy gift tag I found, and tied it to the top of the ornament.

“You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.”

I also had a handful of charms from a bracelet I no longer wore that went great on this!

I can't wait to do this with sad copies of all my favorite books! I scour thrift shops and yard sales for this exact reason now.

Ugly Christmas Sweater (Review/Giveaway)

Christmas is coming!! Christmas is coming!! I could scream this at the top of my lungs. Christmas is probably one of my favorite holidays aside from Thanksgiving of course!

When Christmas rolls around, it is time for family dinners, holiday parties and just plain all out festivities. There are so many things to do and see around this time of year.

No doubt you have heard of the trend toward Ugly Christmas Sweater parties. Pretty much, you search for the most creative, "ugliest" (something you would never wear out in public) sweater and go to this party to show off and compete for the best one of the group.

It is a ton of fun and the options are endless whether you are making the thing yourself, hitting up a thrift store, or buying one like they offer on UglyChristmasSweater.com. This site is your GO-TO if you want to have the Ugliest, most awesome sweater at the party!

For review, I was given the opportunity to pick ANY sweater on their site and boy did I have my work cut out for me trying to narrow it down to just one.  The designs on the sweaters range from inappropriate for children's eyes (lol), to Star Wars, to Novelty Movie quotes, and so on.

There are well over 30 options to choose from and they also offer leggings, jackets, costumes and accessories.

It took me a while to choose and I also had to ask my husband for his advice. We finally settled on one we both liked, and man was I excited to get it!

I chose a Green, White and Red sweater with a Giant Storm Trooper (Please don't make me explain, but I will just in case - STAR WARS bad guys) with Antlers on it. Really? How could I not.

I received my sweater in the mail seriously the day after I ordered it. They must have overnighted that bad boy to me! I tried it on and it was a perfect fit. So unlike a lot of online clothing companies, it seems that the sizing is true to actual size! So awesome.

The sweater is so comfy that I actually have been using it as my go to sweatshirt when I get cold around the house. It is lightweight. yet still heavy enough to keep you warm, if that makes any sense!

It is a very soft feeling sweater too, sort of like those comfy blankets they sell at the store around Christmas time.

I washed it in a normal load like I always do, and dried it as well in the dryer, and it did not stretch, shrink or lose its shape! Yay again!

I actually was invited to a Ugly Sweater Party, but unfortunately was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts - - but I bet with this ugly Christmas sweater on, I would have rocked the show!

I will definitely be wearing this out to my next camping trip and probably through the rest of the winter season because, well... Storm Troopers haha! Star Wars for life baby!

One really notable thing about this company is that they offer a few sweaters that you can buy where they donate 30-50% of the proceeds to major charities! Toys for Tots, Alex's Lemonade and Big Cat Rescue, as examples. How cool is that?

Salt Dough Holiday Ornaments

With a husband in the military, we aren't always able to spend our holidays together with the rest of the family. My family lives in Germany (a 12hour non stop flight away and a long and exhausting trip to and from airports) and his in Oregon (a 16-18hour drive away). 

This year we made the decision to stay at home because, to be honest, as much as I love seeing family, a flight to Germany for the whole family is just not in the budget and just the thought about keeping a high energy kindergartner and crazy toddler busy in the car for such a long drive had my stomach in a twist. So, staying in the wonderful Mojave desert it is (sarcasm).

However, I don't want our families to miss out on how the little ones have grown and we want to send them a “piece” of us. Here I was, thinking and coming up with giant ideas about picture collages, etc but then the simplest idea came to my mind: Salt Dough Ornaments!

I remember when I was little we did this in kindergarten as a gift for our parents and grandparents for the holidays – I know my grandma still hangs the hand print of 4 year old me on her holiday tree every year!

So I spent an entire afternoon Skyping with my grandma until she remembered her salt dough recipe: 

The Recipe:

2      cups   flour

1/2  cup     salt 

3/4   cup     warm water

Bake at 300F for 30min.

  
I was very positive surprised by how cheap the ingredients were! At my local Commissary, I payed $1.89 for a 5lbs bag of flour, $0.90 for 1lb 10 oz of salt which makes a batch of Salt Dough approximately $0.44!!

Salt Dough Ornaments

Here is what you will need:

• flour
• salt
• warm water
• food coloring (optional)

You will also need the following items:

• a mixer (optional)
• a knife
• cookie sheet lined with parchment paper
• a wooden spoon, pencil or small round cake decorating tip
• a roll pin
• paint (you can use water colors, markers, acrylic paint, finger paint, nail polish, etc.)
• paint brushes
• cookie cutter (optional)

Step 1:

Preheat your oven to 300F.

Get your dry ingredients together and mix them up good.

Step 2:

Add your water and food coloring if you want your dough to have a certain color, then mix it all well, if your dough is too dry then add another 2tbsp of water!

Step 3:

Kneed the dough by hand for a little bit to make sure it's really all well combined, then roll it out approximate 1/4 inch thick on a slightly floured surface.

Step 4:

Make hand and/or foot prints or just simply use a cookie cutter to make a shape.

Step 5:

Making the holes: I came up with two ways to do that.
 
The first one would be to use the end of a wooden spoon or the tip of a pencil to poke a hole or the second way (I prefer that one) is to use a cake decorating tip and poke a hole in it.

Step 6:

Put them on the cookie sheet and bake them for 30min (they should be dry and harder but not brown or burned).

Step 7:

Let them cool completely and then get creative :)  

Step 8:
Paint them, write on them, let the kids get messy, whatever you want! 

My kids and I had so much fun making these that I am sure we are going to make this a new holiday tradition now; and the big plus for all the parents out there: I kept them busy for an entire afternoon and everything they didn't paint I painted once they were asleep.

Flourless Yule Log Cake

This past weekend, I made a flourless Yule Log Cake to take to a Winter Solstice gathering we attend each year.  Made with eggs, but no flour - grain or otherwise, this cake is dark and rich and delicious, and allows those who are gluten or grain free to enjoy a bit of holiday pastry.  I've been bringing this for three years now, so I think I can officially declare it my tradition.

For the event I took this to, I made two - in the past only a few people were able to share a taste.  But for a family sized dessert, one is perfect! With the addition of some cherries in syrup, it takes on a delicious Black Forest Cake taste.

Flourless Yule Log Cake 

(makes one roll up)

For cake:

6 eggs

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 tsp cream of tartar

1/2 tsp fine sea salt

1/2 cup dark cocoa

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp orange liqueur (or zest of one orange)

Coconut oil to grease pan

Cocoa powder for dusting

For whipped cream:

1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

1 Tablespoon sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract or orange liqueur

Preparation:

Eggs should be at room temperature.

Cut a section of parchment paper to fit into a jelly roll pan.  Grease paper with coconut oil, then dust with cocoa powder.

Preheat oven to 375F.

Make cake layer:

Separate eggs, putting whites into the bowl of  a stand mixer, and the yolks into another large bowl.

To egg whites, add cream of tartar and 2 tablespoons sugar, and mix on medium until soft peaks form.

While the whites are mixing, add to egg yolks remaining sugar, salt, cocoa, vanilla extract and orange liqueur, and beat by hand with a whisk until well blended and thick.

When whites are beat to soft peaks, turn off stand mixer and fold whites gently into chocolate mixture by hand, so that they are combined - do not over mix or you'll flatten out the air you just put into the egg whites!

Once combined, gently spread mixture over prepared parchment paper in jelly roll pan.  Bake on center rack for 12-15 minutes.  Remove from oven and cool on raised rack.

While the cake is cooking, wash stand mixer bowl and attachments.

Make whipped cream:

In stand mixer bowl, combine heavy cream, sugar and extract or liqueur.  Whip until thickened and soft peaks form (but not so long it turns into butter!).

Putting it together:

Gently spread whipped cream evenly over the cake layer.

Using parchment paper to assist, carefully roll up the cake, pulling away the paper as you go.  

If you work carefully, it shouldn't crack, but if it does just remember - you're making a Yule log, and logs sometimes have cracks!

Once it is fully rolled up, remove the parchment paper.  The cake is sturdy enough to move to a serving plate.  Once plated, slice off ends to make it pretty.  Sprinkle with a dusting of confectioner's sugar, if desired.

(and then eat those ends, because how else can you know if it's good??)

Variations:

Cherry pie filling tastes wonderful with this - I put some in a separate dish for those that want it.  

A slice of cake topped with 3-4 cherries in syrup looks and tastes delicious.

You could also spread out a layer of cherry, cranberry, strawberry or raspberry filling on top of whipped cream before rolling it up - keep it thin or it will be too thick to roll!

Some meringue mushrooms would look adorable with the log on the plate - one of these years, I'll get ambitious enough to make some.

You could also decorate with some candied fruit or sugared cranberries - the possibilities are endless!

Laura Ingalls Wilder Santa Printable

Like many, I grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's series of tales about growing up as the daughter of a restless pioneer.  The fictional Laura, based on the author herself, shared Pa's pioneer spirit and inclination to the adventure of seeking new land beyond the boundaries of settled country.  From her Ma, she learned how to be a gracious and capable woman far away from the trappings of civilization.

Of course, much of her life seemed exotic - full of family tales of being chased by wild animals or blizzards so blinding one could get lost and freeze to death traveling from house to barn, or children left alone during a storm burning up all the household furniture to stay warm.

Certainly, I'd never (and still haven't) experienced a hog butchering or done laundry outdoors in a tub. Wilder's deft talent for describing these difficult tasks and experiences made them come alive, and seem not only not tedious, but intriguing and magical.

Even so, in many ways, I identified with Laura - I grew up in a military family, so we too were always making a home in a new place and her own sense of adventure and joy in discovering simple features of each new place is how I strove to be regarding my own experiences of being the 'new kid' once again.

In several of her stories, she wrote about Christmas - sometimes the holiday included festivities, and sometimes they were very, very  simple. But always, they were full of love and each family member plotting to find someway to secretly provide a holiday gift for the others, often with very limited resources.

When my children were growing up, Christmas was often trapped in excessive consumption - as they were and are for most these days - and in many ways I regret that and wish I could have a do-over. At the least, I regret that I didn't weight the concept of giving thoughtful gifts more highly than the concept of hoping to get your heart's material desires.

But always, in homage to the Ingalls Family, I would tuck an orange, a banana, and a few unshelled walnuts into each stocking.  They didn't always get it - there were occasional complaints, especially about the nuts!

But when one or the other of them would discover the Little House series for themselves, I always hoped they'd read one of the Christmas passages and see those simple little treats for what they were - an opportunity to be a part of a simple and meaningful tradition, and a chance to be glad for the luxury of living in a world where oranges and bananas and walnuts are not seen as exotic or hard to find. To remember that there was a time not so very long ago when such things were rarely experienced treasures from far away.

One of my (many) favorite passages comes from "On the Banks of Plum Creek", when the family moved into a sod house in Minnesota.  In this passage, Ma and the girls have a conversation about Santa Claus.

“Ma!” Laura cried. “There IS a Santa Claus, isn’t there?”

“Of course there’s a Santa Claus,” said Ma. She set the iron on the stove to heat again.

“The older you are, the more you know about Santa Claus,” she said. “You are so big now, you know he can’t be just one man, don’t you? You know he is everywhere on Christmas Eve. He is in the Big Woods, and in Indian Territory, and far away in York State, and here. He comes down all the chimneys at the same time. You know that, don’t you?”

“Yes, Ma,” said Mary and Laura.

“Well,” said Ma. “Then you see–“

“I guess he is like angels,” Mary said, slowly. And Laura could see that, just as well as Mary could.

Then Ma told them something else about Santa Claus. He was everywhere, and besides that, he was all the time.

Whenever anyone was unselfish, that was Santa Claus.

Christmas Eve was the one time when everybody was unselfish. On that one night, Santa Claus was everywhere, because everybody, all together, stopped being selfish and wanted other people to be happy. And in the morning you saw what that had done.

“If everybody wanted everybody else to be happy, all the time, then would it be Christmas all the time?” Laura asked, and Ma said, “Yes, Laura.”
