With my newborn daughter, sadly, she has to take gripe water (an herbal supplement for gas relief) quite often. We had been giving it to her using the dropper if comes with before I discovered that magical device, Pacidose.
With the dropper, we would squirt into the pockets of her cheeks. She would scream, and cry, and spit it out or just let it drain right back out of her mouth. For this reason, we never knew how much she was actually taking in, and didn’t feel comfortable giving her more. That just left her undermedicated and never fixed whatever the issue was.
Thankfully, Dr. Scoville, a mother herself, was just as frustrated by this and did something about it! Using a hospital grade oral syringe and a specially designed BPA and latex free pacifier, she created Pacidose. It is an accurate, mess free, fuss free medicinal administrator.
Inside the nipple of the pacifier, there is a small tube that the medicine flows through. This prevents liquid getting trapped, taking away from the dose accurately making it to the baby’s mouth.
While the baby suckles on the pacifier, and you slowly push in the plunger, it is putting the medicine to the back of the baby’s tongue, bypassing most tastebuds. My daughter hardly seems to notice most times.
Filling, using and cleaning were all completely brainless. To fill, detach the pacifier from the syringe and dip the tip into the liquid medicine and pull the plunger back until it fills to the accurate dose measurement.
To clean it, you do the exact same with warm water.
I have seen many other similar products, though I wouldn’t even call them competitors. They are clearly not made with medical grade measuring syringes.
Also, it appears that the tube running through the nipple is unique to the Pacidose! Reading through some Amazon reviews on others, they all seem to leak or leave liquid in the nipple of the pacifier, defeating its purpose.
Although not something I’ve had time to discover on my own, I saw a few mentioning that after a few months, Pacidose loses its measurement lines. It is important to note that it is NOT recommended for dishwasher cleaning. That may have been the owner’s mistake, but I can’t say for sure.
If it is an unavoidable issue over time, Pacidose will connect with any standard medical grade oral syringe, which you can find at any pharmacy. Or better yet, for just $7.99+s/h, I’d just buy a new kit!
My 7 week old daughter, who is not even a fan of pacifiers in general, took to this amazingly, and almost always falls asleep while suckling and taking her medicine.
Ever cooler, just for the fun factor, my 5 year old is even quite prone to it! Without Pacidose, we still have trouble getting her to take it without much fight. Most cases, we have to cover our eyes, and count and then act surprised when it ‘magically’ disappears. Hey, whatever works, right? Now, she will take her medicine quickly and efficiently without any complaints! She loves getting to push the plunger herself, mostly.
I have absolutely zero complaints about Pacidose and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone. Furthermore, this will most definitely be tucked in to every baby shower gift I give from here on out. I believe this should be a staple in any household with young children. You never know when the need for meds is going to arise, and you don’t want to make a bad situation worse by having to fight them to feel better!
Pacidose can be purchased on both their Website, as well as on Amazon, for the same price ($7.99+S&H).
