Monthly Watch Club (Review/Giveaway)

20 comments:

When it comes to men's fashion I will be the first to tell you that I'm not great at it. I feel most comfortable in a t-shirt and jeans. And that's how I tend to dress most of the time. Now that my current profession in the Army is coming to an end though, it's time to step up my game a little and prepare for a respectable civilian career.

One thing I've been learning from research is that when considering a professional wardrobe, it's a general rule of thumb for men is that you can wear two accessories: a ring and a watch.

Anything more than that can look sloppy and juvenile, or overdressed, especially if you don't know what you're doing.

I wear my wedding ring all the time, so the only thing that leaves open for me is a watch; of which I own approximately zero.

Watches are hard for me to choose.

I have exceptionally small wrists and I admittedly tend to prefer smart watches over conventional analog or digital designs. And when it comes to fashionable, analog wins, right?

Lets face it. I need some help.

I could go to a store and have the sales people try to push me their most expensive product, sure. But that's not who I am. It's not so much about the money spent for me, but about the quality of the product and its aesthetics. I would happily wear a $5 watch as long as I didn't have to buy a new one in a few days and I found it visually appealing.

Monthly Watch Club is a company based out of Canada that helps to take the guess work out of watch shopping. They provide a unique, custom made watch every month that is yours to keep. They work with watch makers from around the world to provide quality products for $25.00 USD ($33.00 CAD) a month.

When the opportunity to review them came up I was happy to be the one to give it a try, especially after I saw what they did for my fellow RCH writer, Jessica, with their Watch Club for Women.

This could be exactly the help I've been looking for.

The watch I recieved was their men's watch for the month of September 2017. It features a 41mm gold colored front enclosure, stainless steel back, glass face, and a 23cm brown leather band. The watch weighs only 50 grams, uses the PC32 Quartz movement, and is even water resistant.

The watch is very elegant in appearance. I will say, though that it feels a little feminine with the smaller 41mm face even on my small wrists. But maybe that's just me (remember, I'm used to big smart watches, if I wear any at all).

Another thing to note is that this watch is kind of loud. Maybe I'm just not used to hearing the ticking on my wrist but it feels a little distracting in times of quiet.

But with two kids, who really gets that any more? Ha!

On first impression, the watch didn't feel to be of a terribly high quality, due to how lightweight it is. That's again possibly because I am used to smart watches which are generally MUCH heavier than 50 grams. Close to triple that for some of the ones I've owned.

But lets face it, I'm not really a watch guy. And at only $25.00 for an attractive watch, I really can't complain much about it.

And a subscriber to the Monthly Watch Club would get a new watch every month, so you could build a wardrobe of watches to choose from on any given day - they don't need to be tough enough to withstand daily use over a long period of time.

It definitely feels more like an adult watch than I'm used to.

With all that being said, I would certainly continue a subscription with them. I've looked over some of their past watches (which can be purchased from their website in addition to the subscription) and am quite intrigued by their selection.

While I don't feel that this particular watch is really my style there are plenty of other past watches that I feel look great and would be a daily accessory for me, so I know a good percentage of the watches received on a subscription would quickly find a place in my (new, adult, professional) wardrobe.  And I'm confident you'd find the same!

Review: Prep Dish Meal Plan Subscription Service

2 comments:

There is one argument that is a constant in my house. As a matter of fact, the Mister and I have this fight nearly every single night. It's really the only thing we fight about.

What do you want for dinner?

This question is the main cause of friction in my marriage, because he wants to eat what I want to cook and I want to cook what he wants to eat. See our dilemma?

Without question, meal planning is a great solution because you don't have to worry about that dreaded question every night - it's already decided! And, you only have to go the grocery store (my least favorite chore) once that week, getting all of your ingredients in one trip.

However, when we have tried meal planning before, it always seems to end up with the same few meals over and over again, and my begging him for some input about what he wants to eat. After a couple weeks, I just give up.

Just when I was resigned to the belief that meal planning couldn't work for us, I encountered Prep Dish. Prep Dish is a meal plan subscription that offers both Gluten Free and Paleo menus.

Plans start at $14/month and the subscription includes a meal plan for four dinners, one breakfast, a side salad, a snack, and a dessert, along with a grocery list, and instructions for a prep day as well as each day's instructions.

Prep Dish has eliminated my dinner distress and has made dinner time quick and easy, which, as the mom of two little ones, is always appreciated!

With every meal plan, there is a prep day, which takes about two hours (sometimes a bit longer), but after that initial day, the meals are extremely quick to whip together. If you use Sunday to prep, your dinners for during the week are all set, and there's no worry about endless chopping after a long day!

If, however, there is one week where you won't have an entire afternoon to dedicate to meal prep, there's even a week's menu that has a quick prep, which will take only about an hour.

I don't often have the luxury to be in the kitchen for hours because the Mister is active duty military and often gone for a few months. I shudder to think about the state of my house with the kids left without adequate supervision for that long!

Instead, I have found a different way to get around the meal prep day. I color code each bit of prep for each meal, and use that code to do the prep before dinner like normal.

Each month, you get access to the menus for every week, as well as the quick prep week, for both Gluten Free and Paleo diets.

These recipes are written with the intention of a family of four eating them, two adults and two children. With only one or two adults and one child eating these meals, I have found that the leftovers after about two weeks can get us through nearly an entire week of dinners!

I've been using Prep Dish for about six weeks now, and I am going to continue using Prep Dish to make my life, or at least my dinners, much easier!

Veteran's Day Review/Giveaway: Purpose Outfitters

28 comments:

I have such a strong appreciation for small businesses that give back, and today it is my great pleasure and honor to highlight a company that impresses me to no end - Purpose Outfitters. This is a sister company to Sockwork, which Jackie reviewed awhile ago.

Like Sockwork, Purpose Outfitters makes socks for men or women and donates a portion of what they make to a variety of charities. What sets Purpose Outfitters apart is that their selection of socks are each designed to commemorate a specific Fallen Soldier in partnership with their family, and a portion of the profits go to a Veteran friendly charity of the family's choice.

The next of kin of any Fallen Soldier can apply to Purpose Outfitters to have a sock dedicated to their veteran by contacting them at hero@purposeoutfitters.com.

For review, I was sent two pairs of socks - one for Marine LCpl.Colton W. Rusk and one for Army SSG Brian Piercy.

It was very hard to select, as each of the Hero's stories are quite compelling, and I hope you'll go read them all and check out their family's chosen charities.

But I did request LCpl. Rusk specifically, because he was a dog handler and his story touched me particularly deeply - his Black Lab, Eli, protected him after LCpl. Rusk was fatally shot by a sniper in Afghanistan in 2010, and now lives with Rusk's family.

The family has established the Colton Rusk Semper Fi Scholarship, and proceeds from his commemorate sock help fund it.

The pattern of this sock is woven into the fabric, not merely painted on, and it is a very attractive greenish-grey with black Labradors on it, black heel, toe and band. "Rusk" is woven into the top foot area just above the toe section. I've gotten several compliments while wearing them!

The second pair I was sent is designed and dedicated to Army SSG Brian Piercy. He was killed in Afghanistan in 2010 by injuries sustained from an IED. His death occurred less than a month before the end of his second tour in Afghanistan.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Piercy sock go to help support Legacies Alive, which is a non-profit organization with a mission to help support Gold Star families (those who have lost a Fallen Hero) keep the memory of their loved ones alive via a variety of events and the establishment of local area memorials.

SSG Piercy's sock is also a very attractive design, with a navy blue front and dark red with white stars in the back. The toe and band are white, and "Piercy" is lettered in white just above the toe area.

On Veteran's Day and always.
All of Purpose Outfitters' socks are midcalf height, medium thick weight and soft. There is a wide band at the top that keeps it from digging into the calf, while making sure they don't slide down, and they've held up well to washing without shrinking.

Care instructions recommend laying flat to dry rather than putting them through the dryer, which is what I'm doing to keep them in good shape.

In addition to the two I received, there are four other sock pairs currently available, each of them designed to highlight the warrior being commemorated. For example, CPT Torre Mallard's sock has a football pattern, reflecting his love of the game.

Purpose Outfitters socks are made in the US and are a blend of 70% Combed Cotton, 20% Nylon and 10% Spandex.

You can purchase a single pair of socks for $18 with free shipping, or sign up for Sockwork Subscription Box, and get one Sockwork pair and one Purpose Outfitters pair each month by selecting a "Mixed Box" for as $20 a month (how's that for a deal?!).

Sockwork/Purpose Outfitters are allowing us to offer one of their Fun Sock Boxes to one of our readers in the US - this box will contain 1 Purpose Outfitters sock pair, and one from Sockwork's Richer Poorer Sock collection in the winner's choice of size.

Read on to see how to enter!

(This allows us to contact you if you win!) This will open up additional optional entries to increase your odds of winning.

This giveaway is open to US RESIDENTS ONLY and will end just before midnight ET on 11-25-15.

The winner will be notified by email within 24 hours after the end of the giveaway. In order to claim the giveaway prize, the winner will need to respond within 24 hours of notification, or an alternate winner will be selected.

Once the winner has responded and confirmed, their first name will be posted on our Giveaways page.

Good luck everyone!

Review: IONutrition Meal Delivery Service

16 comments:

A few months ago, Vanessa reviewed the Fresh n' Lean Meal Delivery Service, a company that sends single-serve healthy organic vegetarian meals straight to your door.  They've now developed IONutrition, a sister company that follows the same business model and nutritional standards, but for those of us who'd prefer healthy, organic foods that include meat protein along with quality vegetables and carbs in moderation.

For review, I received three entrees suitable for lunch or dinner, and two breakfasts.  They came packed inside a very sturdy styrofoam thermal shipping cube along with several cold packs so they arrived still nicely chilled.

From what I understand, these thermal cubes are being used regularly by companies that need to ship food products that require refrigeration - this is my first experience with such a shipment and the vision of quickly piling up a mountain of styrofoam sent me running to Pinterest - sure enough, people are coming up with all sorts of ways to repurpose them to avoid excess waste.

(Seriously - upholstered storage ottomans, planters, even outdoor cat shelters!)

I did notice that the cold packs and remaining open space in the cooler had led to some tumbling of the food containers in transit.  Each packet is very well sealed in sturdy plastic, so there was no breakage or spilling but the food inside had slid to one side or covered the clear plastic cover, creating an aesthetic issue with the appearance of the food.  It didn't impact the taste at all, but I think perhaps a bit of crumpled newsprint to fill in the loose gaps in the cooler would help prevent that.

Rather than eating dinner separately from my husband, I decided to use my entrees for lunch, when I am alone, and looked forward to enjoying one IONutrition meal a day, instead of vaguely thinking I should eat something, not getting around to it until mid-afternoon, and then scouring the cabinets in case their might be chips lurking somewhere.

Not that I do that... (ahem)

The first meal I tried was one of their breakfast entrees - a Raspberry Multi-Seed Loaf made with gluten-free flour, maple syrup, applesauce, coconut oil, safflower oil, baking soda, vanilla, blackberry raspberry, lemon zest, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and sea salt.

This was a really substantial, large bar (at least 3"x4") about the consistency of a thick brownie.  The fruit notes were subtle - it was pleasantly sweet without yelling "Sweeet!!!!" at you.  I really liked the crunchy seeds that topped it, and was only able to eat about half of it before I felt quite satiated, and that feeling held through lunch.  I put the rest away and nibbled on it over the course of the afternoon.

I only made one mistake with this one - I thought I'd try the leftover part warmed, and microwaved it for a few seconds, and the result was not great - it immediately toughened up and became very dry.  So ... don't do that.  Enjoy this one straight out of the package.

The second breakfast I received was the Nutmeg Almond Berry Chia. Now, I've seen recipes for chia pudding, but I have never had it before, and I have to be honest with you - the appearance of it scared me silly!

Much like tapioca, this pudding gels together and was a strange, slightly greyish color full of chia seeds, topped with a raspberry swirl and sliced almonds.  The effect would have been right at home at a feast composed of scary Halloween foods!

The ingredients are chia seed, coconut cream, coconut milk, maple syrup, raspberry, blackberry, almond, cinnamon, nutmet, cardamom, vanilla, sea salt, and filtered water.

Nothing scary there, right? I hesitantly took a bite and - I loved it!  The pudding was cool and soft, and the berries and nuts added a lot of flavor and a bit of crunch.  The seasonings were well balanced, and the result was both tasty and sustaining.

Its appearance still scares me a little, but I plan to try making this at home.  In the end, this was my favorite meal of the five and I would happily enjoy it on regular rotation.

The first lunch/dinner entree I tried was the Garbanzo Tomato Stew with Turkey.

Made with Garbanzo beans, carrots, sweet potato, cauliflower, kale, celery, garlic, tomato, coconut oil, smoked paprika, sweet paprika, chipotle powder, nutritional yeast, cumin, pepper, salt and filtered water, this dish had the consistency of curry, and the seasonings were flavorful, but not strongly spicy.

This was very similar to something I might make from scratch, and the portion size was more than I could eat in one sitting.

The one problem I had with it is that the Garbanzo beans were a bit underdone for my taste.

And in fact, this turned out to be the case with the legumes in each of the three entrees, even though each used a different variety of bean.

I am not sure if this is a matter of taste or a general tendency to undercook the legumes, but I have a few digestive issues that make me very leery of eating underdone legumes.  I notice that they've begun to offer a Paleo menu (which would not include legumes at all), and if I use this service again, I'll stick to that meal plan.

The next one I tried was the White Bean Mushroom Medley Quinoa with Salmon. This is a really generous portion of salmon which was flaky and cooked perfectly, and a quinoa pilaf made with white beans, carrots, onions, zucchini, cremini mushrooms, portobello mushrooms, broccolini, sun dried tomatoes, extra olive oil, coconut amino, garlic, oregano, thyme, marjoram, basil, lime, paprika, red pepper flakes, sea salt and filtered water.

Next to the chia pudding, this was my favorite - and had the beans been a bit more cooked, it would have been perfect.  Here again, the seasoning is deftly handled, well balanced and neither overwhelming or bland.  I was very impressed with how well the salmon was cooked, and the quinoa medley made this feel like a great deal of food while still coming in at under 600 calories.

Due to a trip I needed to make, I asked my husband to try the last entree for me, and he brought it with him to work for lunch.  This was the Dual Bean Rosemary Chili & Beef. This is made with white beans, adzuki beans, onion, carrot, maple syrup, balsamic vinegar, cinnamon, paprika, cumin, coriander, thyme, rosemary, black pepper, sea salt, and filtered water.

His impressions were very similar to mine - somewhat undercooked beans, but a generous serving of meat, well balanced and flavorful seasonings. Spiced but not hot, and the packaging was very convenient for transporting to work, and heating at lunch time.

So why might someone want to have their meals delivered?  There are several reasons why this service would be desirable, either for a short while or longterm.  These are just a few I can think of:

- If one is attempting to lose weight, these meals provide a healthy, nutrient rich method of controlling portion sizes and avoiding non-optimal eating habits.

- If you eat differently than others in your household, this would be a way to keep to your own routine without the family cook needing to make two separate meals.

- If you are struggling with healthy options for lunch, these are a great way to avoid the burger and fry routine (or worse, the 'what's in the vending machine' routine!).

- If you live alone and find it difficult to cook good meals for one, this is an alternative that - again - keeps you from less desirable options.

- If you're recuperating from a significant health event, such as injury, illness or giving birth, these meals would provide you with healthy, nourishing meals at a time when you would have little energy to prepare them yourself.

- If you travel a lot - IONutrition will deliver wherever you ask them to, including hotels!  As fun as it is to eat out occasionally, being stuck with it regularly can be bad for both wallet and waistline.  As long as your room has a microwave and fridge, you've got a way to eat some nutritionally sound meals in your room rather than seeking out the nearest restaurant (or vending machine).

One of the things I like best about IONutrition is how flexible it is to use.  There are several dishes available for 'A La Carte' purchasing, and a variety of Meal Plan options, ranging from the 5 Entree Lunch Box (5 entrees) to 7-Day Week Plan (7 breakfasts, 7 lunches, 7 dinners).  And my favorite - the Paleo Meal Plan, offering 5 or 7 portions of breakfast, lunch or dinner, all Paleo-compliant.

In all cases, shipping is included in the pricing, and the price per meal varies according to which plan you choose. (It is significantly less expensive per meal when you select more than one meal per day.)  Which specific meals turn up  in your weekly box will be a surprise, but they have a large and growing menu that focuses on seasonal flavor palates and in all cases they will be made according to IONutrition's healthy standards.  If you have any specific food issues, you just let them know when you order, and they'll make sure that food doesn't wind up in your box.

If you'd like to give IONutrition a try, you can get your first order for 15% off by using the promo code RCH - this doesn't include the a la Carte menu.

Review: Fresh N Lean Meal Delivery Service

15 comments:

Fresh n' Lean drew my attention with their ingredients - organic, fresh, farm to table, gluten free, and plant based. Plus they deliver!! Just looking at their website, my mouth started to water for how good the meals look. While browsing Fresh n' Lean’s Facebook, I loved how many posts there were on exercise. I have a Master’s degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion and believe exercise and healthy eating habits must go together for optimal good health.

Actual good healthy meals delivered? This had to be a joke right? Nope, not a joke, a FedEx box arrived with a cooler inside to keep fresh 5 meals and 3 breakfasts.

Fresh N Lean believes it should be easy to provide healthy meals for you and your family. This philosophy is right in line with my priorities for me and my family.  My professional background is in grounded in holistic nutrition - when I think of food I go through the process of the soil that grew it, the farmer that cared for it, those that picked, transported, and prepared it. So, I was very excited to enjoy a “break” from cooking for a few days and know we were still be nourished.

Shipments are on Fridays, so Friday evening a FedEx box arrived on my door step. I liked that I was not required to be home to sign for the box (you never know when boxes are going to come and who really wants to be at home all day waiting for a delivery?). Inside of the FedEx box was a cooler with the meals and cooling system.

The meals are in individual containers with the nutrition label and ingredients provided. I’m a earth friendly kind of person so I loved that everything is recyclable! Convenient, earth friendly, and healthy!

All you are required to do is get them in the fridge as soon as you can, warming up the meal when you are ready for it, and enjoying a convenient healthy meal. You have the option of puncturing holes and microwaving your meal in the container it comes in for 2-3 minutes. If you’re not a fan of the microwave, like me, you can transfer the meal to an oven safe dish and heat for 15 minutes at 350 degrees (I don’t like to wait for my oven to preheat so I use the broil setting on high for just a few minutes). The last option is to transfer the meal to a pot and warm it up on the stove top.

So how do they taste?

Menus change weekly and are posted on their site. Here’s what I received and how it tasted:

Tropical Peach Mango Chia - chia seed, coconut milk, coconut cream, Grade B maple syrup, vanilla, mango, peach, sea salt, and filtered water. This was my favorite breakfast! I loved the fruit in the chai seed pudding. You can warm this up, but it’s hot here in the desert, so I loved it cold.

Raspberry Poppy Seed Muffin - gluten free flour, grade b maple syrup, lemon zest, raspberry, baking soda, vanilla extract, and sea salt. I’m not a muffin fan, but did try these and actually really liked them. They crumble a little easy (I did not warm them up so that may change the crumble) so it’s good to be sitting down at a table with a plate.

Hearty Granola - gluten free rolled oat, walnut, almond, sunflower seed, vanilla, grade b maple and syrup. This one had 2 servings so I split it in half for my son and me. Fresh n' Lean recommends adding almond milk with fresh apple or banana. I did not have these, so I added coconut oil to moisten it. Turned out great and my son ate an entire serving (awesome for a picky toddler).

Cauliflower Medley with Quinoa  - quinoa, rainbow chard, red chard, eggplant, yellow cauliflower, green cauliflower, purple cauliflower, almond, onion, carrot, celery, artichoke heart, kalamata olive, tomato, garlic, nutritional yeast, marjoram, black pepper, sea salt, and filtered water. Quinoa is a staple to my diet so this dish tasted similar to ones we make. The almonds stood out to me as one of the main flavors. I loved the nutritional yeast!

Curried Rice with Vegetables - brown rice, onion, shiitake mushrooms, cremini mushroom, carrot, yellow bell pepper, orange bell pepper, broccoli, red cabbage, garlic, ginger, tumeric, coconut amino, coconut oil, lemongrass shallot, galangal, dried red chili, coriander, kaffir lime peel, cumin, cinnamon, mace, cardamom black pepper, sea salt and filtered water. This one was my favorite meal! I loved all the flavors it had.

Spiced Lentils with Dino Kale - green lentil, coconut oil, onion, carrot, celery, zucchini, dino kale, tomato, turmeric, ginger, cumin, coriander, smoked paprika, paprika, garlic, black pepper, sea salt, and filtered water. This was my second favorite, I love Indian dishes and it reminded me of that flavor profile.

Spinach Florentine Pasta - brown rice pasta, broccoli, portobello mushroom, spinach, zucchini, carrot, onion, celery, cherry, tomato, garlic, oregano, tomato, thyme, nutritional yeast, sweet basil, marjoram, black pepper, sea salt and filtered water. When I opened this meal I realized I had not eaten pasta in a very long time. I really liked that the pasta was from brown rice.

Eggplant Alfredo - brown rice pasta, yellow cauliflower, green cauliflower, purple cauliflower, spinach, eggplant, carrot, onion, garlic, nutritional yeast, rosemary, sweet basil, parsley, thyme, coconut oil, black pepper, sea salt, and filtered water. Of the two pasta dishes I enjoyed this one best!

Did they fill me up?

Breakfast and lunch filled me up. For dinner I am used to eating a larger portion. Part of their goal is to create portion control (which is a great goal). I workout every morning for an hour, move a lot throughout my day to keep up with a toddler, and breastfeed so I had to add a snack in. I have been thinking about how I will need to change my portions once I am no longer breastfeeding so this was a good trial for me to see where my portions are currently at and go off how I feel.

If you prefer some meat in your diet Fresh N Lean does have a cousin site - IONutrition. I’m a vegetarian/ mostly vegan so Fresh n' Lean fit perfectly for our home.

There are an abundance of options to choose which plan is right for you:

5 or 7 days a week

Shipping is free.

When you sign up for a plan you will be automatically billed each week.  There is also the al la carte option to choose whatever you would like.

On their website there is a tab for menu where you can see what will be coming for the week or what you would like to order from the al la carte option.

When you select a meal plan, each week your delivery will be on your door step. When you need to make changes you are required to call or email by the weekly cutoff of Monday 12:00 noon PST. An a la carte order is a one time order and you must place a new order for each delivery.

I live in a place where eating out is not an option because there is nothing but fast food. Anytime I want a “break” and to know we are continuing to be nourished through our meals, I will definitely be keeping Fresh n' Lean in mind!  Most of them freeze well for later use, and they will even deliver to a hotel when you're traveling, as long as you notify them of where to deliver by the deadline!

If you'd like to give them a try, you can use the Promo Code RCH at check out (excluding the a la carte menu) to get 15% off your purchase!  There's no expiration date for this code, so enjoy!
