New Year's & Game Day Treats from Gramma in a Box (Review)

3 comments:

Being a working mom with two young kids is never easy. I still want to do fun projects and make treats with them, but often find myself with very little time to actually do so. Thankfully, I was able to get another Gramma in a Box treat decorating set this month and it was just as fun as last month's!

Gramma in a Box is a monthly subscription service that sends nearly everything you need for three yummy treats!

The only things I've needed to provide on my own have been a spoon and bowl, a paper plate, and scissors. Everything else, from the cookies to the sprinkles to the melting chocolate and pretzels, is in this little box!

The theme of this month's box was New Years and Football.

While my little family isn't really into football, it didn't stop us one bit from enjoying both the making and the eating of these treats!

The first of these treats was the New Year Sparklers, which was pretzels with a white chocolate coating and sprinkles.

My kids and I found a great way to make sure everyone got to participate in this in a way that nobody got burned.

My son would hold the pretzel over the chocolate bowl, where I would cover the end in the melted white chocolate (once again, I needed to use a double boiler to melt it), then he would turn so that his sister could sprinkle the pastel dots over it.

The kids had so much fun, they were a little sad when the sixth pretzel was finished!

The second treat was the Game Day Crunch, which didn't lend itself to being much of a group project, as it was mostly mixing hot, melted chocolate into the add ins, but that didn't stop us from enjoying it once it was set!

The third project, cookie decorating, was easily the kid's favorites. The 8 cookies were plenty for us to decorate, without being too many as to be overwhelming.

As last month, everything was tasty, and my son and I definitely enjoyed the eating part!

Unfortunately, my daughter has a very restricted diet, and couldn't partake in that, but she had so much fun with the making, I don't think she minds too much.

I still think that Gramma in a Box is a great subscription, especially for those who may be a little time crunched, as making all three treats took just under and hour, and that was with a distractable four year old and using the stovetop instead of a microwave to melt the chocolate.

The monthly box subscription has plans starting at $20 for a single box.

To me, not having to worry about going to the store, getting all the supplies, baking the cookies, measuring out the other ingredients, is well worth it!

Just knowing that each month will bring a fun family activity and treats makes the kids and I very happy!

Gramma in a Box is Kid Tested and Jess-Approved!

Blue Owl Preserves (Discount Code)

2 comments:

After a month of no sugar at all while on Whole30, I was really looking forward to breaking my sugar fast without diving back into overly sweetened, highly processed junk.  My biggest anticipation was to (finally!) break into an adorable sampler set of handmade preserves I'd received for review  from Blue Owl Preserves.

I love homemade jams and preserves - especially when, like Blue Owl, they are made so that the flavors shine through rather than simply tasting like, well, sugar!  These are listed as low-sugar (cane sugar - no artificial substitutes), and each of the four I tried are sweet enough while letting the fruit flavors take center stage.

I was able to try a sampler of four 1.25 oz varieties (Strawberry, Apricot, Mango-Lime and Blueberry Rhubarb), which came stacked in a cute clear tube.

To take advantage of these jams, I made some grain-free muffins (they use coconut and almond flour), and my husband and I enjoyed them as a treat-filled brunch along with eggs and bacon.

As a side note - this is the fun part of having a sampler set to play with - some muffins, or crepes, or even toast are made special-occasion because everyone can have a little bit of everything.

Strawberry and Apricot are my two favorite single-note jams, and these lived up to all the expectations my sugar-free month had built up, tasting like the fruit they're made of.   These are jams rather than preserves, so while there were some texture from the fruits, for the most part these are nice, thick spreads.

The Apricot, in particular, was a lovely burst of bright flavor I really enjoyed!  It would be excellent as a glaze for chicken or pork, and I regret that I didn't hold some aside to try. (So, I'm glad that Blue Owl Preserves sells 8 oz. sizes as well!)

The real star for me was the Mango-Lime - it is bright and bursting with flavor, and is another one that would be wonderful as a sweet note for a savory dish.  I'm thinking how amazing this would be with a good seared salmon filet!

I practiced a little discipline with the Blueberry Rhubarb, because I wanted to use at least one of these as a part of a meal instead of simply enjoying them as a spread - I'll be sharing a recipe with you in a couple weeks, but I really do want to encourage you to consider the wide array of uses there are for high quality jams like these, apart from the most obvious choice.

Here are just a few ideas:

- stir into plain yogurt as a 'make your own' fruit at the bottom treat
- use to top pancakes and waffles, either alone or spread with a bit of nut butter instead of syrup
- crepes filling, with or without some whipped cream cheese.
- as a topping for a bowl of oatmeal
- as the jam part of thumbprint cookies
- as part of a fruity vinaigrette
- as a glaze for chicken, fish or pork
- as a glaze for roasted root vegetables
- ??? Use your imagination!

Meanwhile, they made a delicious treat for the two of us - biscuits or muffins and tea or coffee shared with the ones you love is no small thing., and Blue Owl Preserves were the perfect way to have this moment.

In addition to the varieties we tried, Blue Owl Preserves full line includes several varieties:  Apple Butter, Apricot, Peach, and Strawberry as single-fruit jams, and Blackberry Nectarine, Blueberry Rhubarb, Mango Lime, Mixed Berry, Peach Habanero, and Spiced Pear - Cranberry as blended fruit jams.

If, like me, you find yourself wanting to try them all, there are also a few sample four-packs to select from.  These vary from time to time but currently available are these:

The Berries Sampler Set that includes four 1.25oz jars (Strawberry, Mixed Berry, Spiced Pear - Cranberry, and Blueberry Rhubarb).

For a limited time, you can even choose from among a few personalized Valentine's Day labels. This set is on sale for $12 and order soon because Valentine's Day is almost here!

The other currently available sampler sets, available for $13.00 each are:

Classic Sampler Set - four 1.25oz jars (strawberry, mixed berry, peach and apricot)

Colorado Sampler Set - four 1.25 oz jars of jams that highlight the fruits of Colorado (peach, blueberry rhubarb, spiced pear cranberry and blackberry nectarine).

Blue Owl Preserves is offering our readers a a discount, useable between now and  - if you purchase 3 Sampler Sets between  now and May 15, 2018, you'll get a %10 discount off your order, a $3.90 savings.

Use the discount code RCH at checkout to get your savings!

These little samplers would not only make fun and unique Valentine's Day gifts, but they'd be a great tuck in to an Easter Basket or as part of a Mother's Day gift basket!

I hope you'll check out Blue Owl Preserves, soon - and if you're in Colorado you'll find them at several local area shops and markets. I love supporting small businesses, and Blue Owl is a great example of why - the love and attention put into each product is so clear.

NibMor Drinking Chocolate Banana Smoothies

18 comments:

I've been sharing with you some of the things I've been making with NibMor's line of organic dark chocolate products.  I wanted to tell you about their drinking chocolate separately from my main NibMor chocolate review, because these are a special treat that even those needing  to avoid chocolate candies due to sugar content can enjoy.

Instead of using cane sugar to sweeten their cocoa blend, it uses organic coconut palm sugar.

What's the difference?  Coconut Palm Sugar is low on the glycemic index (meaning it has a lower effect on glucose, or blood sugar), making it a safer choice for an occasional indulgence for those with diabetes.

Emphasis on occasional - coconut palm sugar is still a carbohydrate, and will still rack up the calories.

For me, I find it to be a far more acceptable substitute for cane sugar than more chemical alternatives, simply in terms of taste.

In addition, NibMor drinking chocolate is dairy-free and works great with non-dairy milks (like coconut), so it's a treat vegetarians can enjoy, too.

With the NibMor drinking chocolate, I actually would have been fine if it'd been a little less sweet than it was - and also found I enjoyed it more when I used more coconut milk than called for. (I'm that way about hot chocolate in general - I like a milder, milkier taste)

I'd received one pouch of each of their three varieties: Traditional, 6-Spice, and Mint.  I enjoyed them all - but the flavored varieties were really interesting. The Mint was like a liquid Thin Mint cookie, and made for a wonderful midafternoon snack, split with my husband.

I was a little confused about the package instructions to be 'sure not to boil' with no guidance on why, so I decided to avoid messing it up and just made some cold chocolate milk with the Mint Drinking Chocolate.

One thing that really impressed me was that with just a bit of whisking, the powder was entirely blended into the coconut milk, leaving no residue either in the mixing cup where I blended it, or in our glass after we'd finished it.  That never happens with previous chocolate drink mixes I've tried.

My favorite flavor was the 6-Spice, and I'll be looking or more of this - in addition to the coconut palm sugar and cacao powder, it has a delightful blend of cayenne, cinnamon, fennel, cloves, star anise, white pepper and sea salt.  The result for me was like an amazing chocolate chai - it wasn't hot, but the spices added a really welcome depth of flavor. This will be the version I seek out to keep in the pantry.

Finally, we decided to put together a smoothie - we haven't done this too often in  the past, because our old blender was...well... sad.  We finally got rid of it and replaced it and this seemed like the perfect creation to try in it.

I say that to say - ignore the ingredient amounts in that picture - we were eyeballing what we put in, and frankly we went a little nuts and wound up with LOT of smoothie. Good thing it was so delicious!

So I'm sort of guessing on  the amounts that would make more sense for smoothies for two, here - but I do recommend putting things in the blender in the order listed (start with the bottom of the list in the picture)

Chocolate Banana Smoothies for
Two

2 bananas, peeled and cut into 1" chunks
2 cups baby spinach
1 cup plain greek yogurt
1 cup whole milk
1 package NibMor Drinking Chocolate
Ice (optional - will make a frozen drink)

Add each ingredient to the blender in the order listed, ending with ice if desired.

It's fine to vary the ratio of yogurt to milk, depending on your preference - the yogurt will make for a thicker, more tangy smoothie.

Blend, following your blender's recommendations for making smoothies.  If need be, stop the blender to use a spatula on the sides of the blender to completely mix the smoothie.

That's it! Divide into glasses and enjoy!

If you'd like to try NibMor drinking chocolates, they are available for purchase on their website, at select local stores, or through Amazon.

On their website, you can choose from six-pouch sets of any of the three flavors, or a variety package of two of each flavor.

You also still have a couple more days to enter our amazing NibMor Chocolate Experience Giveaway, which includes one pouch of each of the drinking chocolate flavors, along with a TON o other goodies!

Review/Giveaway: Frontier Bites Gluten-Free Snacks

35 comments:

Sometimes, it seems like you have to choose between delicious and healthy when it comes to snacks.  I try to choose wisely and have had to give up some old favorites due to issues with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), but I still crave small bites now and then and don't want to have to give that up.

My personal snacking inclination leans toward crunchy and crisp and I prefer savory or lightly sweetened over intensely sweet things (desserts are for sweet things - and only as a special occasion for me).

I hadn't heard of Frontier Bites before, but when the opportunity to review their line of gluten-free snacks came up, I jumped on it!

Frontier Bites are the brainchild of a pair of brothers, Nate and Matt, who set up a competitive challenge for themselves to come up with a recipe that could be an alternative to the highly processed energy bars available at the time. The rules were that the result could only include 10 or fewer ingredients one could find in their pantry, include no refined sugar, and be gluten, soy and dairy free.

Nate won the competition with his Almond Blueberry Lemon Bites, and after tweaking, they proved to be good enough to set them on the path toward starting their own business.

Tragically, in 2011, before they were able to bring those plans to fruition, Nate was killed in a river rafting accident, leaving Matt to carry on for both of them.

Until recently, Frontier Bites came in three varieties:  the original Almond Blueberry Lemon Bites, Macadamia Pineapple Coconut, and Pecan Cherry Cinnamon.

Now, they have two new flavors, and these are the ones I was sent for review: Cashew Cranberry Orange, and Pumpkin Seed Apple Vanilla Bean.

I immediately tore into the Cashew Cranberry Orange - this is already one of my favorite flavor blends and I was excited to see what they'd do with them.   I was not even slightly disappointed - the puffed millet and brown rice make for a snappy bite complimented by the crunchy almonds, and burst of flavor from the dried cranberries and bright orange oil, which tasted as fresh as if I'd bitten into a newly peeled orange slice.

I was and am smitten - everything about these granola nuggets is exactly what I've been looking for. After my first taste, I was almost reluctant to share with my husband (but I did, because I'm nice like that. He loves them, too!)

The Pumpkin Seed Apple Vanilla Bean Bites were also very good, and shared the same perfect crunch and flavors that play well together.  The apple tasted like apple, the vanilla was discernible, and the hulled pumpkin seeds were nutty and delicious.

Each nugget is just about an inch big, and five of them makes a serving size of about 110 calories. I found them to be pretty satiating, although they're tasty enough that might well eat more than a serving just because they're so good and fun to eat.

Frontier Bites are also perfect for taking along as a portable snack - the nuggets are lightweight carrying and hold up well to jostling without turning to crumbs.

In fact, my husband and I took these along with us to the Woman's March last month, and it was very easy to pull one or two out of a baggie even while standing in a dense crowd. They provided a welcome bit of sustaining energy, and we plan to be sure to bring these along for future outings and road trips.

The 3.53oz resealable bag contains about five servings, and is available for purchase on their website for $4.99 each.  They also carry packs of 8 single serve pouches for $15.00.

You can also find Frontier Bites on Amazon, or you can check their store locator to see if they are available for purchase in your area.

Frontier Bites is letting us host a Giveaway - one of our US readers will receive a 'mixed case' of Frontier Bites, containing one resealable pouch of each of their five flavor blends, valued at $25. Keep reading to see how you can enter to win!

Review/Giveaway: Old Trapper Beef Jerky

40 comments:

Out here in the hills of Western Maryland and South Central Pennsylvania, dried meat is a ubiquitous staple in every convenience store or gas station one encounters. Not just your token Slim Jim at the register—you usually get a “meat aisle” that rivals the candy aisle in variety, and you’d be surprised at some of the quality available at your average Sheetz.

As a kid, my dad used to go on a lot of hunting trips. My mom expressly forbid him to hang deer carcasses in the garage or process his own conquests, so he would take them to the butcher and return with various goodies. The jerky and the dried chipped venison were always the best.

Maybe I have been spoiled, but store-bought jerky has always sort of been a consolation prize.  It’s usually sort of shoe-leathery and has that distinct MSG flavor—something that a lot of people (who are not me) actually enjoy.  So, when I do eat it, I want the ingredients to be as close to that childhood jerky as possible.

I recently had the opportunity to try Old Trapper Beef Jerky for review.  Old Trapper is an Oregon-based company that has been in the bee jerky business for over forty years, using, as they say on their site, "the best lean strips of beef, freshest seasoning ingredients, and real wood-fired smoke".

They sent me a generous bag (10 oz) of their Traditional Style Old Fashioned Beef Jerky, as well as a smaller bag of their teriyaki flavor.

The ingredients in the Traditional Style are thus: Beef, Brown Sugar, Water, Salt, Hydrolyzed Corn Protein, Vinegar, Flavorings, Sodium Nitrite.

Okay, not too bad in terms of jerky. “Hydrolyzed corn protein” is essentially a natural source of MSG, while Sodium Nitrate is contained in practically all cured meats.

I was slightly disappointed with this discovery, because I was somehow under the impression that “naturally wood smoked” meant “absence of nitrates”.

Old Trapper makes its jerky using quality sliced steak, and bits of gristle and fat were pleasantly absent.

The texture is notably more moist and tender, and chewy without being tough. The brown sugar gives it a slightly sweeter flavor than most, and the vinegar a little bit of tanginess. It is fairly highly seasoned, in my opinion—it could have been a bit more subtle, but that’s just personal taste.

The Teriyaki flavor punched this up to the next level.  The ingredients here are:

Beef, Soy Sauce [Water, Soy Sauce Powder (Wheat, Soybeans, Salt, Maltodextrin) Sodium Benzoate], Brown Sugar, Apple Cider Vinegar, Hydrolyzed Corn Protein, Salt, Flavorings, Sodium Nitrite.

Nothing personal to Old Trapper, I just don’t particularly care for teriyaki. It’s a flavor profile that I find kind of “meh” in general, on anything.

For people who love that super-sweet and salty flavor, this will be a good choice, and  proved to be very popular with people I shared it with.

Of course, venison and beef are two distinctly different flavors, but I would say that Old Trapper is the closest to the butcher-shop quality that I’ve tasted in a store-bought beef jerky, and it should appeal to jerky connoisseurs anywhere.

In addition to Old-Fashioned and Teriyaki, they also currently carry Peppered Jerky, Hot & Spicy, and Original Beefsteak, which is cut into thick strips so that it retains a chewy, meaty quality.

They also offer a number of other snacks, including snack sticks and deli-style sausages in a variety of flavors, as well as snack boxes and an option to make a subscription-style recurring order.

Aside from their products, the website itself is a fun place to visit - the "Old Trapper" himself has his own biography, as well as a series of entertaining video commercials sure to make you laugh.

Old Trapper is generously offering a sample pack of at least 6 of their most popular snacks to one lucky winner in the US. Keep reading to see how you can enter to win!

Review/Giveaway: NibMor Organic Chocolates

53 comments:

I am a huge chocolate fan from way back, and I've had so much fun this past month discovering NibMor Organic & Natural Chocolates.  From what I understand, if you live in NYC or the Kennebunk, Maine area, you probably already know about this wonderful little company, but for the rest of us, I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to spread the word.

The name is short for "Nibble More," and this chocolate is not only delicious enough that you'll want to do just that, but the high quality healthy ingredients means you can let yourself indulge more, too.

I received a big batch of chocolate bars and drinking chocolates to try out for review. I've not only nibbled and tasted, but I've used these bars in a couple recipes I'll be sharing over the next few days.  For right now, though I want to tell you a few things that make this brand special, and let you know about the excellent giveaway NibMor is letting us host!

NibMor's Organic Dark Chocolate Bars come in seven varieties, each of them a generous 2.2oz bar that breaks into eight squares.  I received the Original Dark Chocolate (72% Cacao), Crispy (72%), Extreme (80%) and Sea Salt (80%).  In addition, they make 72% Cacao Bars in Mint, Almond, and 6-Spice.

I have to admit, I was pretty intimidated by those percentages - I like dark chocolate, but I've come across several artisan brands that were quite dry and bitter, and I have tended to associate that with the higher level of cacao to other ingredients.

I started with the Extreme, assuming that would be the one I liked least - but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit!  One square was plenty for a satisfying snack, and I chose to set aside the rest of the bar to use the rest in a recipe.

The difference between this and some of the more bitter dark chocolate I've tried seems to be that they use a good bit of cocoa butter, which gives it a much more satisfying mouthfeel and a hint of creamy richness that is usually missing in dark chocolates. So you get all the health benefits of a fine organic dark chocolate without compromising on pleasure.

After seeing how much I liked the Extreme Dark Chocolate, I broke open the Dark Chocolate with Cacao Nibs & Sea Salt, also with 80% Cacao - this is basically the Extreme bar with extras.

Wowww.

On their website, they say "... if it doesn't change your life, it will make it a whole lot better."

And they are absolutely right - this is the dark chocolate I've been searching for my whole life, no kidding!  I broke it into squares, and hoarded it for a delicious daily nibble. Perfection!

The other two bars are 72% Cacao each - the Original is a clean, smooth bar that also has that same enhanced mouthfeel I noticed with the Extreme.  Here again, I took a taste and then set aside the rest to use in a recipe.

The Crispy bar adds crispy brown rice to the Original formula, giving in texture and a nice bit of nostalgia for one of my favorite candy bars from my youth.  Very pleasant, and I added it to the Cacao Nib & Sea Salt bar to add to my one-square-a-day stash.

Before I move on, I want to mention that NibMor Organic Dark Chocolates also come in individually packaged squares called a Daily Dose of Chocolate, just right for those of us who want to include a regular serving of antioxidants in a perfectly portioned, delicious package to their lifestyle plan. The individual packaging makes it easy to tuck them into a lunchbox or tote, so you have a portable snack to go.

Each ofNibMor's Organic Dark Chocolates are Certified Organic & Vegan, Kosher, Non-GMO and use Rainforest Alliance Certified Cocoa.

But wait! There's more!

NibMor also makes a line of seasonal Natural Superfruit Chocolate Bars - these are dark chocolate bars for milk chocolate lovers, blended with enough cocoa butter that you won't even miss the milk - and the rich flavor of the chocolate and fruit and nut add-ins mean they can keep the sugar to a manageable level, which is my biggest disappointment with mass produced American chocolate  - it tends to taste more of sugar than anything else.

These bars are really, really good - they compare favorably with almost any bar I've ever tried, but can be enjoyed by vegans and those who can't eat dairy!

The four bars contain what they they say they do in the name: Cherry, Blueberry, Cocoa Nibs or Fruit & Nut which has raisins and walnuts.  They come in big 3oz bars, as well as 1oz mini bars.

If you think you don't like dark chocolate, try these - they will make a convert out of you!

The NibMor Natural Superfruit Bars have the same indulgent richness I associate with imported gourmet chocolates, and I've been enjoying them a little bit at a time for an antioxidant-rich dessert bite.  The bars break down into smaller squares than the Organic Dark Chocolate bars, and 2-4 squares at a time seem to be just right for me.

Lastly, I was sent three packets of NibMor's line of Drinking Chocolates, powdered mixtures which can be blended with warm liquid, cold liquid, or used to make fancy chocolate drinks or cocktails.

I'll be doing a separate post on those in just a few days, so check back!  For right now I'll say that if you are needing to keep to a low-glycemic diet, you want to check these out - they have a lovely rich taste, but use coconut sugar so you can indulge without worry!

NibMor chocolates are available for purchase on their website, as well as at various local area shops around the country.  Right now, they are having several Valentines Day specials and sales, so this would be a great time to give them a try!

Finally, NibMor is generously offering one of our US readers a box of every product they make! Called the NibMor Experience, this bundle is also available for sale for $54.99 and includes one each of the 7 Dark Chocolate Bars, one each of the 4 Natural Superfruit Bars, one package of each of the Nibmor Drinking Chocolate varieties and 1 4-pack of each of the 4 varieties of Daily Dose sized chocolate squares!  Wow!

Review: Teasia K-Cup Teas

17 comments:

Hello there! Resident Tea Hoarder Lauren here. I have been so fortunate over these last two years as a reviewer for RCH to try out some seriously delicious teas! I was so excited to test out these awesome K-cup teas from Teasia.

Teasia makes eight different teas in convenient K-cups for your Keurig Brewer. They offer a Floral Series which consists of Jasmine Green Tea, Rose Black Tea, Lemongrass Rooibos Tea and Chamomile Mint.

The Formosa Series consists of Green Tea, Oolong, Roasted Oolong and Black Tea. You can purchase the teas individually or in a variety pack. They are sold 36 cups to the box, but the cool thing is that each cup can be used twice!!

I received the Floral Series Variety pack. The packaging is very attractive with detailed information about each tea in the box.

I tried the Rose Black Tea first. The smell is incredible and the brew comes out nice and strong. The rose flavor was a little too much for me, but they only use all natural ingredients so it wasn't an artificial flavor, just a  strong perfume taste.

The Jasmine Green tea is delicious and my favorite is the Chamomile Mint. It is great for a bedtime tea.

I personally don't care for Rooibos tea. They all taste like the smell of pipe tobacco in my opinion. My husband is a fan of it though and he enjoyed the Lemongrass Rooibos.

As I mentioned above, each K-cup can be brewed twice! The second brew on a single cup comes out slightly weaker in taste and color but that is to be expected. I still found the tea to be very enjoyable.

Teasia uses all natural ingredients and each tea undergoes a strict process to ensure the highest quality in each cup.

The company is also very active with charity support and environmental awareness.
"Teasia© is dedicated in serving its community and environment. With the purchase of every box of Teasia Tea, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to support charities in the areas of environment, education, healthcare and poverty. Help us give back!"
If you love the speed and convenience of your Keurig Brewer and you also love tea, then Teasia K-cups are a wonderful match!

A box of 36 cups sells for $23.40 on the Teasia website and are also available for purchase via Amazon.

The folks at Teasia have been kind enough to offer our readers a Free Shipping Code for purchases on their website!!

Just enter FSRCHREVIEWS when purchasing through their website to get free shipping!
