Why I Don't Wear Make-Up

Six years ago I moved to Hawaii, found the lifestyle I wanted to live, and haven’t looked back. I want to share with you one change I made that was simple, saves me so much time, money and energy.

I battled acne for 14 years. I tried every product out there and medications. Nothing worked. Until I gave up make up.

Like most American women, I started wearing make up when I was in middle school. In high school I wouldn’t be caught without it, even while playing sports.

In college I started to sometimes not wear it. Then I went through basic training and you were not allowed to have make up, but once I went back to college I continued to wear it pretty regularly.

But when I moved to Hawaii, the island life encouraged me to be more natural in both my personal care and in my home. I cleared the house of everything we didn’t need, including chemical filled products. The hair straightener, curling iron, blow dryer, and make up all left the house and have never returned.

My skin cleared up for the first time in my life. I felt comfortable and confident in my skin.

I enjoy how weightless my face fills with nothing on it, not needing extra time to get ready, or needing to keep up with products. I save money, time, bad “make up” days, and truly live a natural life.

I work in the wellness industry and teach women everyday to love themselves and their bodies.

Society is full of you need this, this and this. You don’t need any of that. You need to be you. You are beautiful, and if you enjoy the make up, then enjoy it. If you don’t enjoy it, take a break from it and see what happens.

    1. I found it really had to do with every product that was touching my skin. Once I went to chemical free products my skin became very happy and cleared up.

  5. Love this post! I wear makeup once every few months (special occasions, birthdays, Christmas etc) and I sometimes feel 'guilty' about that. You just made me realize that is the stupidest thing to regret lol. And maybe not wearing make up it's the reason I don't have any skin problems.
You look beautiful and happy! :)

  6. I love your story and how you feel more comfortable and beautiful in your own skin ! I definitely think there is so much pushing of product to feel more "fulfilled" these days and don't agree with that. It's one of the reasons I love green beauty so much as a way to bring out your natural features (not cover them up or change yourself). thanks for sharing this ♥

  7. Love this post! I don't wear make up either, but my reasons are a little different. I realized I was only wearing make up to impress the world, because my husband honestly did not care if I wore it or not. Also, I realized that by thinking I needed to wear make up I was teaching my daughter the same thing. I want her to know she is beautiful without make up and she doesn't need it to look beautiful or to impress anyone. She is my motivation to not go back to wearing makeup!

  8. This is truly inspiring. I've dealt with mild acne since high school and even into adulthood. I, too, am striving for a more natural look.

  9. Our daughter lives in Hawaii and we love visiting and embracing the Aloha Spirit - It's a whole different and beautiful lifestyle! This year when we visit we will get to meet our first Grandchild - how exciting is that? :D Right with you on the no make up though, never have....never will! :D

  10. I don't wear makeup either. A little lipstick but that's it. I can't stand the feeling on my face and I've been blessed with pretty good skin, but as I get older, it requires more maintenance to keep it makeup free. My best girlfriend just moved to Hawaii and I see pictures all the time. Thanks for linking up today at my first party. Glad you came.

  11. This is a great story! I can't go without mascara yet, but I've really pared down my makeup since getting into minimalism and seeing how many products I had! I've tried to simplify my routines and cut back on disposable items and it's been so refreshing! Thanks for sharing on the Small Victories Sunday Linkup!

  13. Vanessa, congrats on finding what works for you, your skin looks gorgeous! It seems that most are more worried about what others think of them, than what they know is good for themselves, isn't that sad. I have never worn a ton of makeup, but now that I work from home, mostly, I rarely wear it. When we go out, or if I do work a catering, and my skin is loving it too!

  15. I have never been a huge fan of make-up. I hardly ever wear it. You do look really good without it! This is some great reasons for not wearing make-up.

  17. I stress so much about making sure I have my "face" on and yet every day I go without any makeup, my kids and my husband comment on how pretty my face it. Oh the crazy things we women do and most of the time, we do it for ourselves only.

  18. I'm not a big fan of makeup either - I wear a little bit to work now that I'm getting older, but I hate foundation and other products that clog up my skin. You look beautiful without all the products and I bet you enjoy the extra money you save! thanks for sharing at our #OTM link up ~ Leanne

  20. I love this post! I wear makeup, but only an organic mineral powder for the sunscreen. (I burn fairly easily) I love the idea of letting who you "really are" shine through! Thanks for adding this to From The Farm, it's one of this week's favorites. Hope to see you again soon!

  22. You are so beautiful without it, you truly do not need it. One of the most liberating things I have ever experienced is when God purged me of caring about what other people think of me and of trying to feel like I have to conform to the standards of others. It is too bad that so many women feel they have to follow what everyone else is doing...God created us all to be unique and follow His individual path for us...not anyone else's. Thanks for sharing your heart. Visiting you from Tracy's link-up.

  23. Love this article. I used to wear make all the time, but no longer due. I didn't have skin problems or acne - I had to because of MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities). I tried using organic makeup & it still bothered me and made my eyes itch and my face. I finally decided that how I look is how I look. This is how God made me. I don't think there any thing wrong with wearing makeup - would still probably be wearing it if it wasn't for all my allergies, but it made come to an acceptance for myself.
