How to: Half Frankenstein Halloween makeup

20 comments:

Halloween is, oh, only the best holiday ever. It is so great, in fact it is my wedding anniversary.  Happy 10 years, babe! For the first five years of my marriage, I did not get dressed up out of respect for the sacred-ness of getting married on that day. Being the makeup artist I am, I decided 5 years is good, and I started getting dressed up again!

I am also competitive, mainly with myself. So every year I have to out-do myself.

Today, I'm going to show you what I did in 2015 for Halloween. I didn’t take enough pics of what I did for last year's awesomeness, so this is what you get, peeps.

The first thing that I do to plan year after year is search Pinterest, YouTube, and Instagram for spooky inspiration. This process usually takes weeks, and I find a few things I like and will create from a compilation.

While researching for this, I found and fell in love with Lex from Made Yew Look. She is down to earth, a great artist, and is fun to follow. I used much her video, and made some tweaks.

FrankensteinMakeup Tutorial (MadeYewLook)

One of the things I did differently was to use liquid latex to create the center wound.  Lex was able to use a Mehron Special Effects kit which I did not have access to. Instead I went to my local costume shop, Disguise the Limit.

Liquid latex is very similar to lash glue. I found that it is easy to build up, so I was able to make the edges of the wound thinner, and thicker toward the center. In the video, Lex cut the wound open, however with the liquid latex, I found it was easier to create the two sides of the wound separately.

The latex does take quite a while to dry, so ensure you have about 32 years available. (hah!)

I did my eye makeup before hand, but realized later that I could have better used my time creating the wound, then doing the eyes.

I did them smoky with purple, inspired by Lex, and color theory. Purple is a great compliment to the green. Lex used a cooler green than I did, as was the purple, I went with warmer hues to make it a bit more different.

The liquid latex dried a milky clear, and absorbed any color I laid over it very nicely. I used a primer all over first, then mixed a green and white face paint with my regular foundation for a hue of green.

I contoured with green face paint at the hair line, cheek bone and jawline, then set with a translucent powder. I then used a variety of green eyeshadows to create more depth with further contouring. For blush I used a very bright pink just on the apple of my cheek.

As Lex showed, I used a brown eye shadow in the center of the wound before using fake blood, though I decided I should have used more to make the blood darker.

For the stitching, I found the thread I had, even though it was thick, was still too thin. I used a sparing bit of liquid latex as glue to triple and twist the thread. I used a brown eye liner to create the "holes" that the stitching needed.

I made the string too long in my practice round, but loved that as I made faces, and changed expression, it showed that the thread was real stitching, not just drawn on lines.

I used the Liquid latex as glue to attach the thread to my face where the stitches would enter the wound.

I did a basic beauty makeup for the other side, adding a plum color eyeshadow, and blush on the far side of the wound, to create "irritation" to the skin. Add realism.

Taking the wound off was easy an relatively painless. Again, think lash glue. Or Elmer's glue when you were a kid, and had to peal it off. What is super cool, is the stitching came off at the same time.

I am so glad that I practiced before the big night.

I got a better feel for the makeup I don’t use daily, latex, blood, stitching, green all over my face…

I also looked at other Halloween makeup ideas, and decided I wanted more drama with veins.

For the veins, I took a basic triangular sponge, gouged irregular holes in it. I then dipped the sponge in a dark green eyeshadow powder, and sponged the veins in place, never going over the same place twice.

Again, I like the drama, and am competitive, so had to out do my practice round.

This was accomplished with a better executed wound, but then I also extended the center wound down my chest, onto my collar bone, and on my hand.

I used a liquid liner to create cracks coming off the wound, and eye.

I used more brown beneath the blood, and extended the veins onto my chest.

On the Frankenstein side I used dark green to vein, and on the beauty side I used purples, and a deep red color shadow.

I already had purple contacts, and decided again to be like Lex and go with the yellow eye. Everywhere I went, they were out of neon green, my first choice. The result was still awesome though!

I have no idea what I will be doing this year, as usual I will go big, not home.

I still have tons of the liquid latex even after a practice round before the big night, so I plan on using that again. That’s about all I know!

Review: nügg Beauty Face Masks

8 comments:

In spite of my very best efforts to keep the holiday season as low key as possible, there really is something about this time of year that tends to feel frantic.  When I get stressed and feeling like I can't get everything done that I want to, the first thing to go is self-care, and that is a mistake, because nothing makes a person feel more frantic and unsettled than a glance in the mirror and seeing a tired, tense face glancing back.

For all of these reasons, I was really pleased to have the opportunity to check out nügg Beauty Face Masks.  These little individual use pods provide six different 10 minute face masks that pamper your skin and provide a short, manageable break from your busy day - simple enough to fit into a full schedule, but full of 'me time' benefits.  Wonderful, right?

For this review, I tried five out of the six face mask options (I decided it was best for my dry skin not to use the Deep Cleansing Face Mask, intended to reduce shine).

There are several ways to buy these masks - they are available at Target as well as on the nügg Beauty Website.  You can buy individual pods for $ 3.29 each, or packs of five of one type for $16.45.  They also come in a variety of 4-packs for $12.99.  This time of year, they even have cute stocking stuffer 2-packs available for $5.99!

Each of the face mask has the same general look and feel to it - a soft, white, nearly opaque gel that is lightly scented.

They're intended to go onto clean, dry skin for between 5-10 minutes, and then rinsed off.  They are cool feeling, and slightly sticky (just enough that it won't drip down your face).

Unlike some masks, these do not dry while they're on the skin, and I found that made it easy to remove.

I also found that there was more than enough in one application to cover my face generously as instructed.  Unfortunately, I had leftovers each time, and there is no easy way to preserve the leftover for a second use, since it's a peel off seal.  I'd love if there were a snap on lid (like little condiment cups), but even so, you'll definitely get one good face mask experience with each pod.

None of nügg's face masks are tested on animals, and they're made in the US, using natural ingredients.

The first one I tried was the Anti-Aging mask, intended to firm the skin and reduce fine lines.  Its primary ingredients are B3, wheat germ oil, white tea extract, glycerin and aloe vera.  The scent was pleasant and subtle and I experienced a firming sensation along with a slight tingle (a frequent experience for me with anti-aging products).  The tingle was soothed once I moisturized after using.

The Hydrating Face Mask has a number of ingredients specifically intended to help the skin retain moisture.  I enjoyed this one quite a bit - no tingle, and my skin felt smooth and soft for several hours after.  I still followed up with a moisturizer, and couple happily see myself using this mask weekly.

The Exfoliating Face Mask was also a pleasure to use - not intended for sensitive skin, this mask uses jojoba beads (an environmentally safe non-petroleum replacement for microbeads) and L-Lactic Acid to remove dry dead skin cells, while the remaining ingredients sooths the face.  I was very surprised and pleased to note that my face felt smooth rather than scratched after use, and wasn't even red (that never happens after I exfoliate!).  This is definitely one I'd enjoy using regularly.

That said, it was the Soothing Face Mask that made me happiest - chock full of gentle soothers like shea butter, this does exactly what it says it will: calms the skin and reduces redness, and I found it did a much more intense and long lasting job increasing hydration than the mask specifically for hydration.  While each user's reaction is likely to be different, I think this is THE ONE to get if you plan to only try one, unless your skin is very oily.

The last one I tried as the Revitalizing Face Mask, which has a wonderful cool mint scent and again, did just what it says it does - refreshes and plumps the skin (much like the anti-aging mask, but in a way I found more enjoyable).  With this you want to be very careful around your eyes (and remember that fumes carry), and wash your hands very well after application, but as long as you're cautious I think this would be a lovely pick-me-up for anyone feeling tired and worn down.

I would strongly recommend keeping a few of these on hand, and think nügg Beauty Face Masks would be perfect stocking stuffers, Secret Santa gifts, or as a part of a spa-themed gift basket.  I definitely plan on buying more for myself.

Review: NeoCell's Biotin Bursts and Serum

7 comments:

Want to find a supplement that not only tastes great but will help your skin and hair?   If so, then NeoCell may be just what you've been looking for!

NeoCell was started in 1998 after the personal experience of its leader, who following a heart attack and surgery, used collagen as part of his recovery.  After seeing its positive affects, he started the company.

NeoCell is a family owned business that produces health and wellness products.  In addition to collagen, they have an extensive product line geared toward natural solutions for health and beauty as well as joint health and sports recovery.

For this review I was sent a 30-day supply of Biotin Bursts Chews.  These Acai Berry flavored chews are not only really tasty, but they really work.  After about 2 weeks of taking the chews, I noticed a clearer complexion with less breakouts and I also noted a reduction in my hair shedding, which has been an issue since my 3rd son was born.

The secret to Biotin Bursts, is well, biotin. Each chew has 10,000 mcg of biotin in them.  Biotin is a B-Vitamin which is known to help with skin and hair as well as protein metabolism which helps with energy.  It might have been a coincidence, but I felt pretty good while I was taking them.

The chews have an amazing Acai berry flavor and a great texture.  They weren't chalky like some supplement chews and their ingredient list was great too!  Biotin Bursts are free of gluten, soy, palm oil, lactose, and have nothing artificial in them.

Along with the Biotin Bursts I was also sent a sample of NeoCell's Collagen Radiance Serum.  Described as "time released with Vitamin C & E complex," this product states that it is a:

  • Potent Antioxidant
  • Protects and Rejuvenates
  • Vitamin C & Vitamin E
  • Paraben Free

The label also says that it will enhance the skin's firmness, elasticity, and moisture.  To be truthful, I didn't really notice a huge difference in my skin while using the serum over the past month.  It is a good moisturizer, and I felt like my skin was brighter after using it, it didn't seem to live up to the label - at least for me.  Currently it is unavailable on the website, although it is available for purchase via Amazon.

Want to try Biotin Bursts for yourself? I recommend you do!  For more information on NeoCell's product line, check out their website and Facebook page which had downloadable coupons.  Also you can buy their products on iHerb and if you are new customer there, use code IHB500 which gives you $5 off a purchase under $40 or $10 for a purchase over $40.

Review/Giveaway: I'm Sold Makeup Eraser

38 comments:

I was super excited to review Makeup Eraser because, let's face it, I wear a lot of makeup!

I was skeptical though. Could a cloth really remove 100% of my makeup, as Makeup Eraser claims? Makeup Eraser claims it will remove waterproof mascara, HD makeup, even stage makeup! The Makeup Eraser has been highlighted on the Today's show, Fox news and is being launched in a few Sephora stores across the nation. Still a bit skeptical.

When I received the (I want to call it magical) Makeup Eraser it came in a pink plastic container, shaped like an eraser. Cute. I get it.

On the box I read: Remove your makeup with just water. Waterproof mascara removed in second. All natural, no chemicals, machine washable, no stains remain. Soft and promotes healthy skin.

So far, so good! I like the idea of being more environmentally friendly.

Inside I see the Makeup Eraser, and a letter from Debbie Merlin, my Makeup Eraser distributor. She explains I need to wash the cloth before use to enable the Eraser to remove makeup and exfoliate the skin effortlessly.

This disappointed me. I wanted to try it right away! Now I have to do laundry! I cheated by hand washing it with mild soap and hung it to dry.

The next night it was on! I was not wearing waterproof mascara, but I was wearing a FULL face of makeup, including lashes! By full face I mean: primer, foundation, concealer, contour, blush, eye shadow, liner, mascara, brows, and as I said lashes. You know, the usual.

First: this thing is soft! Super soft, like mink. It's made of 100% polyester.

To activate the Makeup Eraser, the cloth needs to be soaked in warm water. It initially repels the water, so it needs to be soaked. It expanded with all the water, so I squeezed some out: here goes nothing!

With small circular motions I gently wipes at my cheek. I decided to take off half my makeup, to do a side by side comparison. I did have to go over the same areas repeatedly to remove all the makeup, but I was impressed. When looking closely in the mirror, I could really see that all the makeup was removed!

I was especially impressed with the way the lipstick came off without making the surrounding skin lipstick colored, and my eye makeup did not streak as I had anticipated. I was, however, not surprised when the cloth could not fully remove the lash glue. Even with my usual eye makeup remover I have to use my fingers to pick off some of the glue.

To see if the Makeup Eraser really took everything off, I used a cotton square with toner to test. There was some makeup still, but less than I thought.

I have since seen a few reviews that explain that the two sides of the cloth are for different purposes. The side with the tag has longer fibers, and is meant to be used as an exfoliator. The other side of the Makeup Eraser is the makeup removing side.

Some people who got the Makeup Eraser knew this because they received different informational cards in their packaging. Others, like me, didn't know and learned by trial and error. I learned from them.
I do wish I had this information from the letter sent in my package. I felt under-educated when watching video tutorials people published on YouTube. I also learned the Makeup Eraser really only needs to be washed once a week in washer and dryer.

The next night I used the makeup removing side, then the exfoliating side. The makeup came off easier. When I tested how clean my face really was using toner - I was in shock! Virtually nothing!

As a makeup remover and cleaner, I am very happy with Makeup Eraser. When I asked Debbie Merlin if this replaced all cleansers, she answered in the affirmative. She did add that those with problematic skin could still use a cleanser and toner, but she just moisturizes after using her Makeup Eraser.

I did one more test: super smokey eyes. I took off the makeup of one eye with my usual eye makeup remover. The other eye I used the Makeup Eraser. This time I was not surprised when it worked better than my eye makeup remover.

Makeup Eraser retails for $19.97. This, in my opinion, is indisputably reasonable. The cost of makeup removers and cleansers can really add up. I always needed an eye makeup remover, face makeup remover, and sometimes another cleanser to really feel clean.

I know I'm looking forward to getting my 1000s of uses out of Makeup Eraser!

If you are interested in the opportunity to be a part of the Makeup Eraser movement, Debbie can let you know all about how lucrative it can be!

Debbie has been a Makeup Eraser distributor for over a year and loves it!

Review and Unboxing Video: Lip Monthly Subscription Box

5 comments:

Makeup subscriptions are by far my favorite kind of subscription box, so I was very excited to try out a box from Lip MonthlyLip Monthly sends out a cute little makeup bag filled with about 5 items for just $10 a month. The bag will feature 2-3 full sized items and 2-3 samples.

My Lip Monthly bag had four full sized lip products and a sample of perfume. I am not a huge lip product fan as I can never seem to find a color that looks good on me, but that is the fun part of a subscription like this: you can try out new things!  To see what came in the bag, check out my video unboxing:

Currently, the Lip Monthly subscription is not customizable to your skin tone, hair color or trend preferences, but a quick read through their FAQ's tells me that they are planning that in the future. For now, I feel like its still a great value when you can easily spend $10 on one single lip product at a drug store. This way, you are getting to try brands you might not be familiar with and colors you wouldn't dare try on your own. FUN!

So the only bad news with this one is that one of my products was damaged during shipping. It melted! In January! I contacted them to let them know about the damage and they asked me to set it aside. Oddly, it wasn't even listed on the product card so I almost think it got thrown in as a bonus.

Typically, subscribers would contact  Lip Monthly's Customer Satisfaction team and work something out with them for the damaged product. I mentioned in the video that the normal thing for them to do was replace it, but I don't know for certain that that is the case.

If you are adventurous with your makeup or you just love lip color, you'll definitely want to check out Lip Monthly! They are offering a coupon code on their website where you can get your first month for only $5.00! You have the option to be billed monthly, quarterly or annually for your subscription as well.

DISCLAIMER:
After conducting my review of this product, I found several unboxing videos on YouTube where customers were very disappointed with this subscription box. Others have stated that they have received discontinued or expired cosmetics from Lip Monthly.

I was able to find each item in my Lip Monthly bag as a current item from other retailers so I personally didn't receive discontinued items.

Another complaint that I've heard is that there is some inconsistency with their billing and shipping. Since I received this item strictly for review purposes, I cannot speak to whether or not this is true.

Lip Monthly is still a fairly new sub-box company so it could be that they are working out all the kinks still. In the interest of full disclosure though, I would recommend that you proceed with caution in regards to starting a Lip Monthly Subscription, simply because there are so many consistently bad reviews out there.

If you'd like to learn more about Lip Monthly, be sure to check out their website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram!

Review: SquareHue Subscription Box

5 comments:

Who doesn't  want pretty nails? And pretty nails that supports a great cause? I'm in!

This month, I got the  chance to review SquareHue, a subscription company out of Florida who delivers 3 exclusive, premium nail polishes to your door in the first week of every month.

Every month is a new theme with different and unique colors that exemplify high fashion, and are meant to break you out of your shell. For me, my "shell" included Vamp by Chanel, black, and, yeah, that was it. Consider me a fashionable Humpty Dumpty, I'm now wearing 2 colors I never would have chosen for myself!

When I received my SquareHue box, it was small and didn't look like much. When opened, you see it is a branded box with the 3 exclusive  polishes, and a product card detailing the colors and finishes of the polishes.

I'm not big into nail fashion. I didn't consider different finishes, or textures for polishes.  It makes sense, though - my hubby is a car guy, so I know all about matte finish, and matte metalics, and micro glitter. Duh, girls get these cool advances in color technology  too!

2014 for SquareHue was all about different fashionable locations. Some months have included locations such as New York, London, and Paris.

December's destination was Rovaniemi.  (Rovenemi is a city in Finland, I totally had to look that one up!) On the bottom of each polish is the name of the color with the month and year the color was released.

Joulesupunkin Pajakylä  (Finnish for Santa Claus Village) is described as a micro glitter. This color is what allowed me to be in my shell still, in the deep red family of color I'm very comfortable with.

Sampokeskus (a Shopping Centre at Rovaniemi, an oasis of trends, fashion and beauty) is described as a textured micro glitter.  This gold polish has great texture. For days I kept rubbing my ring finger nails,  and made others feel them too. A fun accent to the red of the first color. Even with all the layers of topcoat painted on, the gritted texture is awesome!

I was afraid of Revontuli (a year round resort where northern lights can easily be seen). Revontuli is a deep green, described as having a suede texture. I think the finish really threw off the woman painting my toe nails, because she kept applying the topcoat, she wanted shiny toes. The polish held up to its description, suede. Its actually  a very pretty  color, it surprised me.

I'm excited to see the 2015 monthly collections. The theme for the year is "Through the Decades." Fun!

The SquareHue monthly subscription is $14.99 + shipping. SquareHue also proudly boasts that it is made in the USA and is 5-free. 5-free means it is free if the 5 toxic chemicals not needed to make beautiful  polishes: formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP, Camphor or Formaldehyde Resin.

Now to the part I love most about SquareHue, Currently a portion of all monthly subscription proceeds are being donated for prevention, awareness, the protection of trafficked victims and the prosecution of human traffickers.  Proceeds go to the A21 Campaign - I followed the link to check out The A21 Campaign, which I did, and you should too.

When I learned there is more to SquareHue than beautifully curated, limited edition colors, all made in the USA, it made me love them.

The SquareHue site is fun too. You can sign up to receive nail mail. Punny.

Review & Giveaway: Udderly Naked Natural Goat Milk Soaps and Products

35 comments:

I have great skin.  I get compliments on it all the time.  I’m also a naturalist and prefer to use as many organic products as possible to ensure I’m getting the most raw and “down to earth” ingredients in and on my body as possible.

That said, I do suffer from a mild form of psoriasis, I have since my pre-teen years.  I was able to get rid of the one patch I had by doing a diet change to the paleo diet, but then I contacted some poison ivy on my leg and there grew another patch of psoriasis.  So I have to keep an eye on the products used on my skin, so as to not irritate this psoriasis.

When given the opportunity to try out some of Udderly Naked’s soaps, I was very excited.  Not only to try out a new hand-made product, but one made from goats milk.

My package arrived in a plain brown box within 2 days of being shipped off. They are usually shipped within 24 hours of ordering, and Wendy even sent me a bonus gift to try out - her rash cream for my psoriasis.

Pay no attention to the curious dog

My package included:
- A brochure of Udderly Naked products
- A bar of the Cocoamint Soap
- A tub of Rash Away Cream
- A small container of Lavender Hard Lotion
- A small sampler of Passionate Pink Lip Tint

My favorite product by far was the Passionate Pink Lip Tint, a mixture of bergamot and vanilla scent infused in beeswax, shea & cocoa butters, coconut,  almond oil, argan oil, kaolin and vitamin E.

I wasn’t sure what gave it the subtle pink color, as the ingredient list doesn't indicate that, but the brochure provided gave me a more in-depth list of ingredients and it appears to be a pink clay for pigment.

It is a great color to wear to work when you don’t want a loud bold lip tint, which is great for someone like me who has big lips.  The texture is very soft and creamy, doesn’t clump up or feel awkward on your lips.  The scent is gentle and pleasing and it conditions my lips to keep them soft throughout the day.

As for the Cocoamint Soap, this is a pretty stout bar.  It lathers well and smells just as advertised, like an Andes mint candy.

The scent is not overbearing in the shower at all and it cleans very well.  The colors are a mixture of brown and green, almost camo looking.  This soap is a mix of cocoa butter, olive oil, coconut, palm, grapeseed and palm kernal oils, parsley, cocoa powder and peppermint essential oil.  Definitely a yummy scent that made me want to eat it.

I made the mistake of opening the Rash Away Cream sideways, thinking it was more of a solid cream, and instead it was very liquidy which meant a quarter of it spilled onto my deck.  But once I figured that out I was able to try it out.

This mixture of coconut oil infused with calendula and chamomile, shea butter, cocoa butter, zing oxide, aloe, neem, hemp and jojoba oils is a blend of skin softening bliss.  The scent is strongly dominated by the shea butter, which is fine with me because I love the scent of shea butter.

It’s very liquidy, but smooths on nicely.  I tend to use a lot of it directly on my psoriasis to help with itching and to put something on for the night before going to bed.

The last item on my list was the Lavender Hard Lotion, which came in a nice tin with a cute little star shape.  I love the scent of lavender, especially for cleaning or before bed to help me rest.

Made from beeswax, cocoa & shea butters, argan, almond, avocado, coconut, sunflower, palm kernal oil, lanolin, vitamin E, and aloe, this is a sure-fire punch for skin health and moisture.

I prefer using this before bed for the calming affect of lavender scent, though you can catch notes of the shea butter scent as well.

The prices range from $10 for the rash cream, $3, $5 or $10 per hard lotion bar depending on size, to $2.50 per lip balm.  For that, you are paying for all natural hand-made ingredients, and some of the ingredients used are rich compared to mass marketed substitutes.  The containers are also very nice reusable containers. These products are made by hand by an independent artisan, and the scents are great!

Some other scents that she sells that I would love to try are the Oatmeal & Honey soap, the Cocoamint lip balm, and the Chocolate Kiss lip tint.

To share in this beauty glory, we are offering a give-away of some free beauty swag for any U.S. customers!

The winner will get:

1 free soap/shampoo bar of choice ($5.00
1 free small hard lotion of choice ($3.00)
1 free lip balm/tint of choice ($2.50)

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment in this entry as instructed by the Rafflecopter, and then leave your Username and email in the Rafflecopter entry. This will open up additional option entries to increase your odds of winning.  Good luck, everyone!
