Review/Giveaway: Treats International Snacks Subscription Box

I am a huge food and an avid snacker. I am constantly looking for new treats to satisfy an itch I never knew I had. I have always been one for trying new foods, too. There are very few things that I will refuse to try (one of which being an octopus that is still trying to crawl off my plate…no thanks). I am always open to new flavors, textures, and interesting interpretations of more traditional snacks. Enter Try Treats, whose tag line is “Explore the World Through Food.”

Try Treats is a subscription service not unlike many others in some ways but in other ways they are completely different. Sure, you’ve seen hundreds of snack boxes, but how many have you come across that offer treats from all over the world?

For a small monthly fee you can take your palette on a trip to a faraway land. With a new country each month it will be very difficult to get bored. Try Treats offers two subscription levels. Their Standard Pack will run $12.95 per month (free shipping) and include 4-5 international snacks. Their Premium Pack will set you back only $24.95 (also free shipping) and bring 8-10 international snacks to your door step. Both subscription levels feature automatic renewal and can be canceled at any time.

I was given the opportunity to check out Treats recently, and I can say that I was not at all let down. I received one of their Premium Pack boxes with a Japanese theme. I was very happy to see just how much they stuff in their boxes.

The first item I want to mention was my absolute favorite from the box. As a child I was always partial to candies. Any candy, really. Two of my all-time favorites have always been cotton candy and pop rocks.

Meiji Watapachi Melon Soda is a combination of a pillow of sour cotton candy filled with pop rocks. My wife hated this but I couldn’t get enough.

I really wish it was a bigger package. I would totally happy if my box was filled with nothing but this stuff.

Some of the other snacks included Strawberry Pocky (which most of us are familiar with or have at least seen in stores), Himemaru rice crackers which are always a satisfying salty snack along with the Kaki No Tane rice crackers. The Kaki No Tane are more of a puffed rice chip where the Himemaru was more like a cracker.

Then there were the Shrimp Chips. Oh the shrimp chips. You strange little puffed wheat creatures. How on earth can they make a puffed chip actually taste like shrimp boiled in Old Bay Seasoning escapes me. You may be thinking that you have heard of things like this or have even tried them before. Not this you haven’t. It was honestly kind of creepy just how much they really did taste like shrimp.

Next we move on to the Calbee Jagabee Butter Soy Sauce flavored potato French fry chips. These were freaking divine. They literally tasted like heaven in a bag. Not too much soy flavor and not too much sodium taste (though I am sure the sodium content was quite high), they proved to be my wife’s favorite by far.

The Kusagai Fruit Gummy Candies were absolutely delicious. Each gummy is individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Even three days later after opening the bag, each individual gummy was still as soft as the very first one I tried. The flavor assortment was quite good as well. I will say, though, that the strawberry gummies did taste a little cough syrup.

Moving on we have the Giant Caplico. This fun creation can only really be compared to an American ice cream cone.

A crunchy cone tasting almost identical to the cone used to serve ice cream in the U.S., this was filled with a powdered substance that I could compare to freeze-dried ice cream.

It was chocolate and strawberry flavor which equated to the perfect Neapolitan treat to enjoy in any temperature.

So we are left now with the Morinaga Milk Caramels and the Shuwa Puccho Stick Cola.

The caramels were perfect. They were the best possible consistency. I usually don’t like caramel candies because they tend to stick to your teeth and can be hard to chew. These were quite literally perfectly creamy and smooth with just the right texture.

The Stick Cola candies were certainly an oddity. Looking at the package I expected it to be bubble gum as it is the exact shape and size as the very popular American gum brand Bubblelicious. This, in fact, is a candy. It consisted of a chewy outer layer filled with a creamy white “froth” and gummies that exploded with cola flavor. A little too much cola flavor I might add. It was a little overwhelming but still quite tasty.

All-in-all, considering the amount of snacks I was able to sample, the convenience of having them delivered right to my door, and the promise of trying snacks from a different country every month, I can say that this is one I would absolutely come back to. These guys were even recently featured on the front page of the New York Times Business section.

  1. This is a cool subscription box idea. I thought the African box would be the most interesting and exotic, because that's the continent with the food/snacks I'm least familiar with. The Peri Peri flavored Fritos (apparently, peri peri is a chicken spice/marinade) sounds like something I'd love to try.

  9. This is the hardest question in the world to answer! My first thought was either Europe, because I'm familiar with those snacks and MISS THEM, or Australia (I have an Aussie friend who has introduced me to a couple of their snacks - hello Tim Tams!), but after reading your review I am so very intrigued to try some of the Asian snacks. The Puccho Stick Cola sounds like a lot of fun, and the Milk Caramels, too.
